Best Browser for My Completely Blind Step Brother (self.Blind)
submitted 9h ago by DarkwellGaming
My step brother currently uses NVDA + Chrome, I was wondering if there was anything better. He mostly limits himself to reddit, YouTube, and some sites for muds. If there is extensions to make YouTube more navigable that would be helpful! Game recommendations would be appreciated as well! He has enjoyed: The Vale, and MUDs (He uses the Mudlet client, and Mush Z for Altar Aeon) like Procedural Realms and Altar Aeon

Reminder: No sight whatsoever.

EDIT: He does play some browser based games like pokemon showdown with me. He does have a hard time with discord though.

###r/Blind is back up but the struggle goes on. Until we have the same access to Reddit's content as our sighted friends we insist Reddit allows us to use the apps which meet our needs.

Does he have trouble navigating Youtube with NVDA and Chrome?

I use NVDA+Chrome exclusively on my laptop, with different profiles for 2 Google accounts and an anonymous (as much as one can expect anyway) profile for beermoney survey sites. Reddit, Youtube, sketchy webnovel hosting sites and sketchier news links from /r/technology and /r/news.

YouTube navigation is mostly tapping through Headers (H key) and using the default shortcut keys for video playing. Unless he listens to the YouTube live or comments/replies, in which case I have no experience and can't comment on that.

He might be interested in persistent browser games too, there's a sub for that, /r/pbg/

I was playing a zombie game recommended from there for awhile, no visuals and easily navigated. Unfortunately, it shut down in April 2022.

This will my second time typing this (having internet troubles as of late), He mostly navigates with the tab menu+ NVDA, I don't believe he knows of H hotkey. I'll tell him about the persistent browser games. Thank you.

Hi,

I know a long time ago internet explorer was the accessibility gold standard but that's no longer supported. Right now I'd say that chrome is, however it's essential to know some of the hotkeys. The most important ones I would say are h (headers) and t (tables,) but I'm sure there should be a list somewhere. I can't provide a great deal of specifics beyond that as I exclusively use jaws rather than NVDA.
