The /r/books Book Club Selection + AMA for July is "Sundial" by Catriona Ward (self.books)
submitted 29d ago by XBreaksYFocusGroup
*If you are looking for the announcement thread for the previous month, it may be found* *here**.*

Hello, all. During the month of July, the sub book club will be reading **Sundial** by Catriona Ward! Each week, there will be a discussion thread and when we are done, Catriona herself will be joining us for an AMA.

From Goodreads (feel free to skip if you prefer to know nothing going into the book as the description contains minor spoilers):

>Rob fears for her daughters. For Callie, who collects tiny bones and whispers to imaginary friends. For Annie, because she fears what Callie might do to her. Rob sees a darkness in Callie, one that reminds her of the family she left behind. She decides to take Callie back to her childhood home, to Sundial, deep in the Mojave Desert. And there she will have to make a terrible choice.
>
>Callie is afraid of her mother. Rob has begun to look at her strangely. To tell her secrets about her past that both disturb and excite her. And Callie is beginning to wonder if only one of them will leave Sundial alive...

You may find the dates of, and links to, the discussion threads below in the sticky comment on this post. You are welcome to read at your own pace. Usually it is pretty easy to catch up and you are always welcome to join the discussions a little later. If you would like to view potential content warnings for the book, a reader-created list may be found here.

For those of you that are viewing reddit on the redesigned desktop version you will see an option on this post to 'follow'. If you 'follow' the book club post you will receive a notification when a new post, a discussion thread for book club, is added to the collection.

CW: there is cruelty and violence against dogs. If this is something you’re uncomfortable with then I would skip reading this one.

Thank you for the heads up. Hard pass on anything involving animal cruelty for me.

I just finished the first section and read the about the author and I’m SO excited to read all the rest of her work! She’s phenomenal with words and also went to Oxford which I am incredibly jealous of

What was June's book? The link to last month shows may did you'll skip June ?
XBreaksYFocusGroup [OP] 7 points 24d ago
Yeah, June's selection just went radio silent after initially expressing a lot of excitement and interest so we had no back up and skipped the month.

thanks wasn't sure what happened there. I just stumbled upon the sub looking for something new to read the book I was reading ended rather abruptly on me

I just grabbed the book from my library!

I fell behind on the May book club and was missing this book club for June, so I'm looking forward to it :)

I actually read this book around the start of the year. In the beginning i HATED the story. I thought the characters were insufferable, the events before were terrible and i just could not sympathize with any of the characters. As i keppt reading, and the reveals came, i was hooked till the end.
ImpossibleVast8589 1 points 15h ago
I just started it and it took a couple of hours of push to get past how I was feeling about the characters.

I picked this up yesterday from the library and finished it today. I thought I could predict a lot of shit but even the very last few pages threw me. It was a very good read.

Can there be an open thread for those of us who powered through?
Pasalacqua-the-8th 1 points 3d ago
There's a link on this page to the July 7th discussion, is that what you're asking about? If not then I'm not sure what you're asking
