The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde(self.books)
submitted 22h ago by lokifan4
Just finished reading this classic and I am truly in love. I though it might not be worth reading because I knew that dr Jekyll and hyde are the same person, but there was so much more to it.
How I interpreted it is that Hyde never existed. it was Dr Jekyll all along giving into his impulse and committing those crimes. The potion did nothing to his personality or his brain but rather just allowed him to change his appearance hence giving him a disguise (Hyde). He gives his alter ego the name of Hyde which reads the same as hide. Dr Jekyll was a educated man of high social standing which prevented him from indulging into his temptation of evil. As Hyde, he could be his true self without facing any consequences to the name of Dr Jekyll.

More like sober vs drunk. This drug does the same thing as alcohol...it let's the monster out of the cage.

I mean, that’s clearly what it’s supposed to imply metaphorically regardless of what’s “really” going on

Exactly. This is like the posts we get where someone reads Frankenstein and says that the Victor was the monster.

Anthony Andrews portrayed Jekyll and Hyde with Jekyll as a slovenly nerd. Mr. Hyde was a dapper upper class sadist. It was a different take on the character.

But the witness descriptions of Mr Hyde differ greatly from Dr Jekyll. Hyde is smaller, possibly deformed and shorter than Dr Jekyll.

Maybe people changed their perception when observed him doing atrocities or being from a different social class? Dunno. Have to read it again.

It is interesting to think that Jekyll and Hyde being the same person is technically a spoiler yet most people probably only know of the story because of that concept.

Can you give us a TL;DR?

I read this to my daughter and she didn’t know the story. So to read a chapter and then talk about it, she had all these questions and trying to figure it out. Then finally at the end as it was all coming together was really cool. I knew the story when I read it in college so to see it through the eyes of someone fresh was fun.

Another interesting take on the story was Jekkyl. A TV series from 2006–2007 that was on BBC and that was written by Stephen Moffat, the same guy who gave us Sherlock and some of the more famous seasons of Doctor Who.
