Elmore Leonard - any fans of his work? (self.books)
submitted 10h ago by WileECoyoteGenius
I am a huge fan of Justified and after learning it was based on the characters by Elmore Leonard I decided to delve into his writing and I've become a real fan of his hardnut, down-to-earth stories with a pretty standard writing flair that doesn't try to be anything but as is (his rules for writing is pretty neat too).

I know his work is old(ish) but I don't really hear about him often, especially given how many of his works have been adapted into movies.

Anyone else a fan of his work?

I got spoiled when I finally picked up a Leonard book. It was Out of Sight. Then the movie came out and was damn near a perfect adaption.

Then I saw that Get Shorty was being made into a movie with John Travolta coming off of Pulp Fiction, so I picked that up too. Again, another near perfect movie adaption.

Then I just kept reading.

His direct sequels never quite matched the quality of the original books, but even a 'meh' Elmore Leaonard book is ten times better than most mystery novels out there.

I'm trying to get a whole bunch of his books but they are damn near impossible to find cheap.

Garage and yard sales is where I find most of mine. Although, they are getting more rare. He didn't sell his name rights like Robert B. Parker did with the Spencer novels. If I see Robert B. Parker's... I pass.

If you like Leonard, try Parker's Spencer novels.

Yes, I first discovered him in the early 80s and read everything. Even his westerns are good.

3:10 to Yuma was excellent.

He is a big favourite of mine. Terrific writer. Eagerly awaiting the adaptation of _City Primeval_ from _Justified_ team this week.

If you like Elmore Leonard, try Richard Stark

Are they the graphic novels?
doowgad1 2 points 10h ago
There are the original novels and they've been adapted as graphic novels as well.
WileECoyoteGenius [OP] 1 points 10h ago
I'll check them out. Thanks.

Yeah, he’s great. The absolute king of dialogue.
WileECoyoteGenius [OP] 1 points 9h ago
His dialogue is incredible. Real rough and tumble types with no flowery-ness to it.

Love Elmore Leonard! Cuba Libre is one of my faves
tinyturtlefrog 2 points 9h ago
Yes! My favorite: Valdez is Coming

My boyfriend got me Rum Punch for my birthday and I’ve been meaning to read it. I’m an English major and all I do is read for school so a lot of my books I’ve been meaning to read for fun have been put to the side, unfortunately. What else would you recommend by him?
WileECoyoteGenius [OP] 2 points 9h ago
The 3 books Justified is based on - Riding the Rap, Pronto and Fire in the Hole, City Primeval, 3:10 to Yuma (and other stories), Hombre.

Rum Punch is the basis for Jackie Brown - but I haven't seen or read it.
Critical-Lobster5828 3 points 9h ago
I didn’t know that last part! Thanks!

Yes, he was great. People here in Michigan are very proud of him.

Huge fan. Read a bunch of his stuff when I was in high school. Might have been the only author I read for the better part of a year. Definitely need to revisit his work!
Boboar 2 points 8h ago
I've only read one or two from Leonard but I think he was a big inspiration for authors like Carl Hiaasen who I love as well.
deathkidney 2 points 1h ago
Agreed - reading Carl Hiaasen is like you were reading Elmore Leonard and took a left turn at Maximum Bob

The film adaptations of Get Shorty and Out of Sight drew me to him in high school, I read those and Freaky Deaky. Really enjoyed the pacing and dialogue.
throwawaysmetoo 2 points 4h ago
He's great, I'll happily pick up and read anything by him. I still have a lot to go too, haven't tried any of his westerns yet.
WileECoyoteGenius [OP] 2 points 4h ago
3:10 to Yuma and other stories, and Hombre are fantastic
Rattlesnake_Mullet 2 points 4h ago
Wrt dialogue and fast paced plots it's hard to beat Elmore Leonard.

Dude was a master.
WileECoyoteGenius [OP] 2 points 4h ago
Definitely. His characters are compelling too. Very pragmatic.

Which Justified?
WileECoyoteGenius [OP] 3 points 9h ago
What do you mean?
No_Joke_9079 -1 points 9h ago
You said "I am a huge fan of Justified..."
WileECoyoteGenius [OP] 3 points 9h ago
the TV show? There's only one (that I know of)
No_Joke_9079 -1 points 9h ago
I thought you were talking about a book.

The great influence on Leonard’s crime books was a short novel called ‘The Friends of Eddie Coyle’ by George V. Higgins. It’s a dialogue-heavy novel about petty criminals in early 1970s Boston. Was an absolute revelation to Leonard. You might want to check it out.

For what it’s worth, people who like Leonard often also like ‘Miami Blues’ by Charles Wileford and ‘The Ice Harvest’ by Scott Phillips. The first was made into an okay movie, the second into a bad one. But they’re both excellent.
WileECoyoteGenius [OP] 2 points 7h ago
I have read it. Will read again too. It's good.
slightkneepain 1 points 7h ago
I may be remembering this wrong, but I’m pretty sure Leonard was once asked his 10 favorite books (or greatest influences) and he just listed ‘Eddie Coyle’ ten times.

I like ‘Diggers Game’ and ‘Cogan’s Trade’ (Higgins next 2 books more), but I can see where his first book would be seen as the classic. None of Higgins’ others that I’ve read were as enjoyable for me, but that might just be me. Or I may have missed a good later one.

I like Tishimingo Blues, based off one of his short stories. Modern day and some wacky sideshow type characters.

Get Shorty
Hurdy_Gurdy_Man_42 1 points 2h ago
I am in the minority but I don't understand the huge amount of praise he gets. None of his novels ever end correctly. It's as if by the time he gets around to finishing the novel, he has a few characters randomly murder other characters and then just call it a day. The Big Bounce, Bandits, Cat Chaser, Jackie Brown... all of them have this problem.

I find the film adaptations of his works usually a lot more entertaining to watch. Get Shorty, Cat Chaser, Valdez Is Coming, Mr. Majestyk, both versions of 3:10 to Yuma, The Tall T - all better than the source.
cicciozolfo 1 points 2h ago
Yes, me! He was a God gift to mankind.
Ramoncin 1 points 2h ago
His books are either hit or miss for me. I loved "Pagan babies", but other novels of his I borrowed from my local library feel unfineshed or underwritten to me.
WhoIsJolyonWest 1 points 1h ago
I recently looked up what books of his are on Hoopla and plan on reading them.

Enjoy!
