ELI5: what is the science behind a “sweet tooth”? What’s the difference between craving sweet food vs craving salty/savory? (self.explainlikeimfive)
submitted 9h ago by FriedrichHydrargyrum
I constantly devour cheeseburgers and tacos but literally never have the slightest desire for anything sweet.

Sweet stuff does nothing for me. Why am I not tempted like other people?

There are several studies that suggest the gut bacteria are capable of "hijacking" our nervous system and send signals (cravings) for nutrients they need to thrive. So it's possible that the aliens living inside us want a candy bar, not us.

Our relationship with food plays a role. For example if you drink a sugar free drink, your body tastes the sweetener and brain thinks, “woo hoo sugar is coming! Let’s spend some here, here and here” starting to budget and plan efficient usage and sending/creating hormone signals accordingly in the brain. Meanwhile the accompanied sugar calories never arrive so you end up craving sweetness more as a result.

Also sugar is a substance that you build tolerance towards. The more sugar you consume the more you need to taste “sweet”. Most people who have a sweet tooth (myself included) are addicted to sugar.

You can see how addicted you are by trying to go one week without added sugar. Try skipping fruit too and see how much withdrawal you feel!
