how to get a job or at least an interview? (xpost from r/jobs) (self.neuroscience)
submitted 12y ago by sethferguson
so i just graduated from college with a BS in may and have been incredibly unsuccessful even getting so much as an interview or an email from any employers. i've been working steady jobs since i was 16 (most jobs held for 2 years) and i have a little bit of research assistant experience. where should i go? what should i do? i feel like nobody even looks at my resume when i send it to them.

tl;dr recent college graduate that can't get so much as an interview and needs help/work

Apply to an internship through the National Institutes of Health. Spend a year or two getting paid to do research while you build your resume and figure out life goals.

This is a bit vague. Could you tell us a bit more about your current situation?
How old are you? What are your career goals? Do you want to stay in science, or would you rather go into industry? Would you like to continue your education with master or PhD program? In which country do you live? Could you imagine applying for a position outside of your home country?

i can try and be more specific where i can. i'm 24, i would like to stay in science but it seems more and more that i would need to pursue my masters/phd. while i'm not opposed to that, i also would prefer not to take on more debt at this point. i live in the US and wouldn't mind at all applying for a job outside the US but with my qualifications it seems unlikely that anybody would want to hire me and deal with moving me across seas and getting a work visa and so forth. at this point, as far as career goals go, i'm not really sure, i've been mulling that over recently and looking for some direction. most of my goals are sort of short sighted, i'm looking for stability, steady pay, somewhere that i can advance...

Well, you could try to get a masters/PhD in a country where education is free or at least considerably cheaper than in the US. One option would be Germany, here is a concrete example of a graduate school application page. Instruction is in English, so this should not be an impediment.

You will probably have to work part time to finance your studies, but the labor market in Germany is quite a bit better than in the US these days. If you are lucky, you could also get a scholarship to cover part of your cost of living. Altogether, you might not need to take on any more debt to complete your Masters. As for the PhD programs, in many places you are paid while you are doing your research. Even if the pay is not great, it would cover your expenses for the duration of your studies.

Admittedly, this career path is not giving you much in terms of stability, steady pay etc., but you can advance, at least scientifically...
