Need ideas for emerging Neuroscience Club at my university. (self.neuroscience)
submitted 11y ago by uacdcalvin
I'm part of a group of students trying to revive our university's 2-year dead Neuroscience Club. Our goal is to start off with a party inviting anyone with an interest in the subject to join our group.
We're trying to make this an immersive experience by including any cool neuroscience-y gadgets (or posters about cool gadgets) to attract the attention of newcomers.
Any suggestions out there on relatively inexpensive/cool things to do to motivate interest in neuroscience?
I appreciate any input you guys have on the matter, thanks!

See if you can get a human brain dissection event going. Maybe have a camera pointed at it that's hooked up to a projector or TV. Talk about general stuff like the lobes, fissures, main sulci, and maybe how the dermatomes map onto the body

I think the logistics of that would be too much for our launching party, but I'll keep it in mind for future meetings, thanks!

If your school has a medical school, or if there is a hospital nearby then it might not be too difficult. In our anatomy class we always look at human brains donated to the medical school though we can't dissect them (we dissect rat brain though). Every year one of our professors also hosts a human brain dissection. Ask a professor and see if he can help. It's worth a shot

I'm the president of the neuroscience society at my university, our club is pretty young and we've also been having trouble getting a big turn out to our meetings....we bought one of these that people seemed to like

Actually someone in our group did mention one of these, but we were unsure how legitimate it is. I guess for only $55 it wouldn't be a bad toy to have people playing with at the kickoff party.

At least you have a club/society. I could only join a biomedical club... /first world problems

Neuro and psych of music processing. Tidbit: your auditory cells, those in that line the cochlea, actually fire at the same frequency as that of the wave they are relaying. eg: The cell(s) responsible for reacting to Middle A (440 Hz) will fire at 440 times a seconds. How often does the body interpret a stimulus so analogously to it's physical properties?!

Very cool, and interesting...never heard that before.

It's a growing field of study, vis-a-vis therapy, and sadly advertising among other things. I got interested when I got this book, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Is_Your_Brain_On_Music , for christmas several years back. The author is featured in a PBS doc called 'The Music Instinct', which is up on youtube somewhere. If the subject interests you at all, just watch a few minutes of the documentary.

Will do, thanks

My school's club recently had a meeting all about the "neuroscience of sex." The turnout was bigger than usual.

Hah! That may be a good way to attract a crowd...
