Does anyone have good suggestions for a speaker for an SfN seminar? (self.neuroscience)
submitted 11y ago by oniraikou
My chapter of Society for Neuroscience is currently looking for possible speakers to come give a talk next fall. We're a new and small chapter, so we're applying for a traveling scientist grant to help with costs. However, before we can apply we need 3 possible speakers on the application. In January we were able to get David Eagleman (author of Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain) to give a talk that went over really well, so we're ideally looking for someone who has a lot of mass appeal and not so much only for neuroscientists. Does anyone have any suggestions for possibilities?

Some of the best neuroscience speakers that I have seen that could have a wider appeal are Robert Sapolsky, Fernando Nottebohm (mostly because he has many entertaining tangents in his talks), Oliver Sacks, and Sally Temple. From that list you should be able to get at least one of them depending on where you are located.

Also, take a closer look also at the local colleges and the neuroscience courses they offer. If someone is doing a non-majors course, they might fit the bill and would jump at the chance to give a lecture on that topic for fun.

It's UTMB in Galveston, so we're pretty small. I had considered Oliver Sacks, but we probably couldn't get someone that big. I'll give this ideas to our chapter president though, thanks!

Jesse Rissman. He's doing amazing work that's relevant to Law as well. This shows the practical applications of Neuroscience.

Basically, he's using MVPA to decode the internal patterns of fMRI data to determine the gradations of memory strength for eyewitness of true, real-world, autobiographical data. The use of this with witnesses would be the real-world application.

I'm his RA and contributing author to this particular study, so feel free to ask me for any details. He's an amazing speaker and I'm his biggest fan.
