At least 4 killed in mass shooting in western Georgia city; suspect still at large (nbcnews.com)
submitted 1d ago by Moonskaraos
CrizzyBill 196 points 1d ago
Interesting because it is "western Georgia", but at the same time it's 20 miles directly south of Atlanta. That's a suburb for many cities.
CivilRuin4111 94 points 23h ago
This state get rural REALLY FAST once you go outside the Atlanta perimeter, even more so to the south side.
CrizzyBill 33 points 23h ago
For sure, but that's the same distance as their outlets in Woodstock. Hampton is ~~20K+~~ 8k people and borders other 20-30k cities leading into Atlanta.

I do get you, I spent some years in N. GA around the towns of 1-2k people, each 20 miles from the next town. That's rural GA to me, not a 20 min drive into Atlanta

Edit: accidentally used neighboring city size, corrected to 8k
CivilRuin4111 21 points 22h ago
I hear you- Going north is a lot different than going south. Currently it still “feels” like Atlanta as far north as Gainesville. You’re definitely in the suburbs and you can feel that, but going south it’s like industrial district after industrial district.

Going south, basically as soon as you pass the airport it doesn’t really feel like Atlanta anymore IMO.
CrizzyBill 8 points 22h ago
Yeah definitely gets desolate faster once you pass the airport, as compared to the north.

Denver has similar vibes with Aurora on the east side. 400k person suburb with urban sprawl, but the east side is open plains once you approach the airport. Anything east of Aurora goes from "Denver area" to "Eastern Colorado" very quickly.
ATL2AKLoneway 5 points 17h ago
Yea having grown up north of Gainesville, it was always 'big city' to us. Buford was basically Atlanta. Nowadays you gotta get almost to Lumpkin or Rabun County to truly feel like you've left civilization.
mhornberger 5 points 22h ago
> Hampton is 20K+

Wikipedia puts it at 8368 in the 2020 census.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampton,_Georgia
CrizzyBill 4 points 22h ago
Thanks for pointing that out, I accidentally flipped the number when looking at cities.

Fayetteville, Griffin, McDonough all have populations 20-30k people and are roughly 10 miles away.
_night_cat 5 points 21h ago
There’s about fuck all south of Atlanta and Jacksonville, FL
MagazineActual 10 points 20h ago
There's Valdosta. I swear Valdosta is cursed and I refuse to stop there anymore on road trips. It's Very Valdosta!
tmoney144 5 points 20h ago
Ever tried to order un-sweet tea in Valdosta? It doesn't exist. My mom once tried ordering un-sweet tea, the waitress just looked confused and then brought her sweet tea. Was delicious though.
mhornberger 4 points 22h ago
There are several towns and some green space between Atlanta and Hampton. What counts as 'technically' suburban is a matter of opinion, I guess. It may not be in-the-middle-of-nowhere rural, but it's not exactly the city. It's a 40 minute drive to the airport.

People don't even care anymore this has gotten too fucked up
PenitentGhost 21 points 20h ago
So few comments for a shooter at large
wart_on_satans_dick 0 points 3h ago
When tRump refused to take action against gun violence we got this. The blood is on his hands.
okwellactually 75 points 23h ago
Well, just one of 4 mass shootings yesterday.

We've already had one today (the 16th) but the day is young and Sundays are statistically the most mass shooting day of the week.

If ya'll wanna go out, Thursdays are your best bet.
noodlyarms 15 points 21h ago
Sunday at 2am outside a club/bar/venue/street takeover/etc... is still a Sunday despite the people involved starting their night on a Saturday.
okwellactually 6 points 15h ago
Yes, that's how time works.
Musicferret 3 points 23h ago
Thanks NRA/Republicans!
Messingwithgreen -6 points 18h ago
Been happening for 40 years. Only real difference is the media now lumping them all together rather than intentionally separating the gang activity (and not really reporting on it past local channels) as they didn't want a narrative to form.
guiltycitizen -11 points 18h ago
Bingo

But it’s easier for most to shift all blame to republicans
Messingwithgreen -7 points 16h ago
It's always easier to create a fake issue that's unsolvable than to discuss the difficult issues that are the root cause.
TeamWorkTom -2 points 16h ago
And the earth's flat right?
Messingwithgreen 3 points 16h ago
yawn, to you maybe. Perhaps that's an easier topic for you.
MagazineActual 3 points 20h ago
That is a depressing website. Even more depressing when you realize we are at a point where nobody is even pretending anything will ever change.
Lulusgirl 1 points 23h ago
I'm wondering, is it everywhere that mass shootings happen more on Sundays?
privatelyowned 10 points 23h ago
Where else do mass shootings happen commonly enough to gauge that?
okwellactually -2 points 15h ago
Here's your top 20 mass shootings by state for 2023.
privatelyowned 5 points 15h ago
You couldn’t come up with a more America-centric response.
okwellactually 3 points 17h ago
No need to wonder. Fortunately, the Gun Violence Archive allows you to export all mass shooting data for the year.

A quick Pivot will show that (surprise!) Texas has had the most mass shootings on Sundays so far this year.

This list is just the top 10.

Edit: that didn't actually answer your question though. You can pull the data down yourself, but in almost every state Sunday is the worst (likely because they happen after midnight on a Saturday).

Edit 2: Awe Reddit, you're so cute. Downvoting factual data that's been posted without bias. Stay classy guys.
Earth_Friendly-5892 2 points 19h ago
We all need to study up on when and where mass shootings tend to happen to make it less of a chance that we’ll be next.
angrynuggette -5 points 23h ago
They go to church to ask forgiveness for the sins they are about to commit.

Ah yes, Thursday. The "Gentleman's Friday"

Wonderful news to wake up to I hate it
Half-deaf-mixed-guy 12 points 1d ago
Don't worry, it's yesterdays news already!!
postonrddt 17 points 1d ago
Sounds like a mass murderer with specific targets/victims in mind.

The suspect is not a mass shooter akin to a video game character he is a cowardly pos killer.
TubularStars 36 points 20h ago
What does this comment even mean though?
Phantom_Feel 11 points 18h ago
The phrase “mass shooter” is usually reserved for acts of violence towards strangers, sometimes politically motivated. This seems like intentional targets, so I don’t know if it qualifies as a mass shooter, just a killing spree maybe?
TubularStars 7 points 18h ago
How does this seem like intentional targets? Nothing in the link mentions it that's all.
TeamWorkTom 4 points 16h ago
Got a source for this? Where does it suggest your claim in the article.
Soft-Avocado9578 -1 points 13h ago
It’s never been reserved for that. It literally means what it says. Mass shooting. This obsession of redditors trying to change the definition is weird.
Waste-Comparison2996 1 points 10h ago
Because if they can separate the different types into smaller groups they can hand waive it away, its the rights only move ever, separate then attack.
DrTautology 18 points 20h ago
>The suspect is not a mass shooter akin to a video game character

Wtf does this mean?
TeamWorkTom 0 points 16h ago
He killed 4 people in a mass shooting.

Wtf are you trying to say? And why does it come off as down playing mass shootings?
Soft-Avocado9578 -3 points 13h ago
There’s a loud vocal minority of people that want the definition of mass shooting changed. Ie. Exclude any mass shootings in black/Hispanic neighborhoods as automatically gang related.

Weird shit like that. Idk why it’s so hard to accept that entire groups of people being shot at once is alarming. But they’re really desperate to play it off for some events as though certain groups deserve it or it’s expected or there’s nothing to be done.
intoxicatedbarbie 2 points 20h ago
He’s cowardly either way.

I don’t know what you mean by the video game character comment, but from the article it does sound like he probably directly targeted those four people. We can’t know for sure without more information.
Earth_Friendly-5892 12 points 19h ago
Welcome to the United States, the land of gun violence run amok.
iwassayingboourns12 3 points 18h ago
I don’t know why you’re being downvoted, you’re not wrong.
devo_inc 8 points 18h ago
There's a posse of pro-gun redditors that descend on posts like this to make themselves feel important.
Earth_Friendly-5892 6 points 17h ago
I’m scratching my head too. I guess it’s an example of the human emotion: denial. The thing is, you have to acknowledge there’s a problem before you can begin to deal with it. And there’s a h*ll of a lot of Americans who won’t admit that we have a gun violence problem in the United States.
intoxicatedbarbie 10 points 20h ago
If only people saying they were pro life cared about living people, and not just controlling women’s bodies. Maybe then we could pass some serious gun legislation.
Disciple_of_Cthulhu 3 points 18h ago
Exactly. Those people are just pro-birth. Once you're out of the womb, you're on your own and no one is obligated to help you live a worthwhile life. Pathetic.
Diddintt 4 points 18h ago
Heat makes people go crazy. I'd expect this to keep up, wouldn't be surprised if we see more animal attacks too.
TubularStars 5 points 18h ago
Yeah I punched my neighbours parrot earlier, little shit.
Bah-Fong-Gool 2 points 16h ago
Dolphins and orcas are fucking humans up left and right...
UraeusCurse 5 points 1d ago
If only there were some way to stop this.
TangoZulu 17 points 22h ago
We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas.
brain-gardener -8 points 16h ago
a common shitpost from folks that only makes sense if you ignore the laws being passed lol
TeamWorkTom 6 points 16h ago
Really? Yet we're on a steady rise of gun violence and mass shootings.

What are these laws doing?
the_jak 5 points 14h ago
Until laws have meaningful ways of reducing the prevalence and ease of procurement of firearms, we are essentially doing nothing.
Typical_Cat_9987 3 points 9h ago
This is the sad truth, and will likely never happen
Earth_Friendly-5892 1 points 19h ago
Yes, if only the legislators had some control over stopping these senseless killings of innocents by a firearm. If only the solutions were right in front of our noses.
UraeusCurse 5 points 19h ago
Well, we can try doing nothing again and see if that helps. 🤷‍♂️
Musicferret 3 points 23h ago
Just normal NRA/Republican things. Nothing to see here…. or in the other mass shootings in the USA.

The victims just needed more guns, right?

RIGHT?!?
the_jak 0 points 14h ago
Where’s the good guy with the gun?
CraftyMushroomBiome -1 points 18h ago
Love those downvoting conservatives that only started to give a shit is when people start talking about gun control
CountyBeginning6510 1 points 1d ago
Just a small mass shooting in a small city nothing to worry about. It's not like the gun violence epidemic is affecting every part of the country.
brain-gardener -1 points 16h ago
it mostly seems to affect specific parts of the country, with the truly random mass shooting being rather rare
Big_moist_231 -1 points 9h ago
“Lmao it doesn’t affect me so nothing needs to be done :)”

y’all suck
joe2352 1 points 1d ago
Just another weekend in the US.
EminentBean -2 points 20h ago
Remember guys: GUNS ARENT THE PROBLEM!

ALL THE MURDER IS UNRELATED TO GUNS AND GUNS ARE GREAT AND THE DEAD CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE HAD GUNS AND THEN WE WOULDNT BE IN THIS SITUATION

FREEDOM

ETC

Here just gonna add /s for clarity 👍🏼

Another day in a shithole country, another mass shooting 🇺🇸 🦅 🤠

Sounds like a normal day.

The 2nd Amendment demands its blood sacrifice and mentions nothing age or location.
VictorHelios1 1 points 1h ago
Time for the bullet tax? Make every bullet cost 10,000$

That way if someone gets shot, you KNOW they did something.
