‘Your heart races a bit’: US weather man threatened with death for mentioning climate crisis | US weather (theguardian.com)

Then they will scream you never warned us... never ending
-FeistyRabbitSauce- 1336 points 19h ago
Climate change isn't real.

But if it is real, you never warned us.

And if you did warn us, it can't be that bad.

But if it is that bad, it's because Jesus loves us and want us to return home to him!

-Paraphrased, but I have heard each of these arguments...
SideburnSundays 892 points 18h ago
“Why would someone who loves you, kill you?”

“The Lord works in mysterious ways.”

Humanity is doomed by the stupid and the rich.
ensalys 299 points 17h ago
> “The Lord works in mysterious ways.”

Which is probably the worst sentence humanity has ever come up with. If he's all powerful as those people like to claim he is, then it shouldn't be any trouble for him to not be mysterious and still reach whatever goal he has set.
spinto1 196 points 14h ago
> Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.

> Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.

> Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?

> Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

> - Epicurus

Given the vastness and complexity of the universe, I don't think I'd ever settle for something short of an omniscient and omnipotent god. If there is one, it sure as shit isn't benevolent or ethical by nature, let alone those traits. My professor in college worded his belief on that pretty concisely: I refuse to believe in a god less ethical than myself.
PurpleTornadoMonkey 29 points 12h ago
It annoys me so much when people say that shit. Like too THEM it's "profound" or something but in reality they have no facts or answers its just a cheap ass cop out excuse.
PreciousRoy43 70 points 17h ago
Indistinguishable from the Great Old Ones of Lovecraftian literature.
ProfessorEmergency18 12 points 13h ago
But his goal is faith, and faith can only be achieved by maintaining the mystery.

There's always some crazy answer.

"Ok then, how do you know God doesn't want us dead or has long since already moved to a race with more potential somewhere out there in the universe since we've clearly failed in our roles as shepherds of this planet?"

Conservative Christians....."the Lord has a plan for everyone!!"
SideburnSundays 64 points 17h ago
That fucking “plan for everyone” bullshit conditioned me to be passive instead of proactively going after what I need or want. Religious people shouldn’t raise children.
PurpleTornadoMonkey 10 points 12h ago
They say that, then something terrible happens to someone they know (wait what if that was God's plan them?) Then they ask for PRAYERS to the God they say has a plan for everyone. Oh and to donate to their gofundme because God doesn't have any other plan to pay for their bills.

theangryintern 5 points 11h ago
My favorite is "We can never know God's plan"

And then when something happens: "It's all part of God's plan"
ParlorSoldier 6 points 9h ago
So, if it actually happens, it was god’s plan, right? How could you ever think abortions and queer people are an affront to god when he’s the one who panned it that way? If it’s all god’s plan, then what is morality, even? Why punish criminals if they are carrying out god’s plan?

Their answer is often “the devil.” Okay, but…the devil is subordinate to god. He must be, or he’d be god. He’s not a human with “free will,” if that even exists. *He’s carrying out god’s plan.*

Sorry, that kind of got away from me.

The Narcissist’s Prayer (by Dayna Craig)

That didn’t happen.

And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.

And if it was, that’s not a big deal.

And if it is, that’s not my fault.

And if it was, I didn’t mean it.

And if I did, you deserved it.
Marksman18 34 points 14h ago
As a Christian that last argument pisses me off. In the Bible God literally says that humans are meant to be Shepard of the earth and take care of it and it's plants and animals.

They'll say only liberals warned them, so they thought it was safe to ignore it. I actually remember seeing an article about a conservative Christian that was also a climate scientist and he went to conservative parts of the US to explain climate change to them, and he had better luck reaching them since he was considered part of the tribe.
CryptographerShot213 114 points 17h ago

They have been conditioned to hate the sound “global warming” so you must not use it. Invent new phrases like “the weather is broken”. I said that to one, she laughed, agreed, and asked who broke it.

For unusually cold days say “when you break the weather, the Arctic spills out”.

But we’re too happy to mollycoddle fascists than to just let them die and be rid of them.

We will never colonize the solar system with these cavemen holding us back.
FifteenthPen 1148 points 20h ago
I grew up voraciously reading science fiction and dreaming of colonies on other worlds. In my 20s and earlier I would have been thrilled to see colonies started on the moon and Mars in my lifetime.

Now I sincerely hope we don't successfully set up colonies in the rest of the solar system any time soon because it's just going to result in capitalists exploiting more resources and becoming even more powerful and oppressive.
DefiantLemur 377 points 19h ago
Mega-corporation will become a reality. Sure a nation like the U.S. is powerful, but is it powerful as a mega-corporation that has company towns on multiple planets?
ChiggaOG 119 points 18h ago
The Governments of the world, specifically China and U.S., will not be able to do much in space if it can’t enforce those laws. I can theoretically renounce my US citizenship if a Mars colony exists.
Genderless_Alien 223 points 17h ago
Exactly, which is why it’s a terrible idea to go along with someone like Elon Musk when they say they want a mars colony. You’d be crazy to think he wouldn’t straight up enslave you if you went. What are you gonna do, leave?
mossling 25 points 18h ago
Psh, you have to apply and pay a couple thousand dollars to renounce your US citizenship *now*, they'll make you pay triple from a Mars colony.
LeicaM6guy 9 points 17h ago
Easy there, Duster.
ArchmageXin 16 points 18h ago
>I can theoretically renounce my US citizenship if a Mars colony exists.

Mars colony wouldn't do much without resources from the homeworld--at least until 2100 (and that is assuming we start today).

Charlie_Mouse 4 points 3h ago
“You’d best start believing in dystopian cyberpunk stories Miss Swan - yer in one!”
cultish_alibi 19 points 17h ago
I'm not worried about it, we are nearing the peak of what we can achieve on earth and the price of that was destroying the natural systems we need to survive. So any mega corp is going to be crumbling in on itself within a few decades as society is crushed under the weight of its own hubris.

Movies like "Outland" and the Aliens series are probably a better prediction of how space exploration will turn out if it ever happens, sadly.
255001434 42 points 18h ago
Yes, it won't be like Star Trek. We have technology now that would astound people from hundreds of years ago, and yet people are more or less the same. In the future it will be that way too.
dollydrew 69 points 18h ago
The relative utopia of Star Trek didn't happen in that story until after humanity suffered a nuclear war. So...it could still happen.

Not to mention that transit time in between colonies/planets/stations will mean that anyone who requests help, is dealing with unfairness or even slavery will be on their own by the time any sort of response is able to make it their way….I too have read far too many science fiction novels
CdeFmrlyCasual 8 points 16h ago
And because earth is our best bet
FifteenthPen 13 points 16h ago
Yep. The idea of fleeing Earth for space is pretty absurd under scrutiny. With our current technology we'd have to irradiate the planet to make it less habitable than the most habitable alternative in the solar system.

Nah....the idea that humanity will join together against a common threat is cute in film and comics...in real life we would be more suspicious of each other than ever, assuming the 'other side' has made some sort of deal with the aliens
Mister_Doc 7 points 13h ago
There’s a recent strategy game, Terra Invicta, based around this kind of concept. The arrival of an extraterrestrial power leads to humanity dividing into various factions with different ideas on how to respond to the threat including “exploit the crisis to make as much money possible, consequences be dammed.”

Unfortunately, we will never colonize the solar sysem if the wealthy keep destroying Earth's environment for the sake of becoming temporarily wealthier. An extinct species does not colonize anything.
Fluffy_Somewhere4305 11 points 16h ago
Not to mention the idea of colonization is the wealthy moving to other places and stealing all the resources and enslaving the natives.

Mars has no natives, and it's not suitable for human life. So the only thing to be done there is mining, to harvest wealth for the billionaires.

There's nowhere in the solar system worth colonizing, so that's okay. When your best options are living underground on Mars and floating in a balloon on Venus, maybe just taking care of the planet you have is a better idea.
Fluffy_Somewhere4305 31 points 16h ago
People love this Elon Musk fueled idea of living on another planet.

Meanwhile, try spending a week in Phoenix in the summer, outside. That's 1000x more habitable than Mars. People are completely delusional about this solar system.

Earth is it, whatever life may have existed on Mars was a long time ago and irrelevant now.

GW bush was actually the initial bumbling idiot pawn of the greedy apocalyptic death cult. Then a black man dared to be elected causing these evolutionary rejects to projected with hate all the conspiracy theories they would cheer when the 2016 pile of lard you speak of suggested.
DonktorDonkenstein 157 points 18h ago
You speak accurately, but you forget Reagan. Reagan famously had the Carter's solar panels removed from the White House. Reagan's presidency was also the beginning of the unholy union between government power and the Christian Right. Even Barry Goldwater was wary of forming that alliance, but Reagan was fool enough to go along with it. Reagan wasn't the first avatar of Right-wing-bumbling-idiot politics, but he sure as shit kicked it into high gear with his anti-intellectual policies and rhetoric.
Fluffy_Somewhere4305 77 points 16h ago
Reagans villainization of the poor was legendary. His office created the proto memes of "welfare moms" in limos. the crack epidemic, blaming HIV on the victims etc

He was a massive union buster and that was the start of poverty wages as the norm for the working class.

He was a world class piece of shit and it's no wonder he is still a hero to MAGA chuds everywhere.
NoodlesrTuff1256 19 points 17h ago
The election of Reagan in 1980 was the 'camel's nose under the tent' moment so far as the rise of the right-wing in the US and primed the pump for the MAGA shit-show we see around us today.
ciopobbi 31 points 18h ago
You all can say this or that about the past, but the dumbing down, the conspiracy theories, the racism, bigotry, hate and domestic terrorism still mostly had a lid on it until Chubby Cheeto blew it wide open and let it spew forth all over the country. And Fox didn’t hurt either.

I remember having some very eye opening conversations with Americans on topics like evolution and climate change \~2 decades ago, and even then it didn't seem like a new thing.

Trump is certainly an abhorrent sign that the underlying issues with anti-intellectualism were never resolved but the heavy handed use of hate, fear and outright stupidity as weapons in US politics predates him by a fair margin.

And also a war on domestic terrorism.

It is insane to me how normalized right wing terrorism has become.

Death threats to journalists and officials, bomb threats, plots to bomb buildings, a plot to kidnap a governor, a coup attempt, "lone wolf" shooters...

This all stems from the vitriolic rhetoric coming from the right. It is the result of their stochastic terrorism, their propaganda.

I always found the "Rapture" people to be a bizarre inbreed. They hoard food, weapons, and cosplay as a survivalist. They prepare for the biblical end-of-times; but why? Aren't they about to be miracled up to heaven? Do they think they're about to conceal-carry at the Pearly Gates?
TomCosella 51 points 17h ago
The people who fall for evangelical bullshit are fundamentally insecure and easily terrified
plipyplop 18 points 17h ago
Agreed, but now that I think about it, I'd love to hear their reasoning for hoarding when the "Rapture" takes place.

As I understand it, they're to be instantly beamed to heaven, first class even. Then... like, why hoard shit for when you aren't even supposed to be home at *"the compound"* anymore?

Is that for other poor souls to use? Probably not, since they hate everyone else.

Ah it's okay, it's too late anyways. We've already basically blown past the tipping point, and now the positive feedback cycles are more powerful than anything we can do to reverse.

Like going over the top of a roller coaster, we're strapped in for the ride, all the way down. Let's see how many people survives the coming decades of chaos.

Am I really a bad person for wanting every single idiot that would do this to just implode while they sleep?
Daflehrer1 8 points 8h ago
Since a death threat is legally assault, how about the cops run down some of those calls/messages and slap the cuffs on?
HappyFunNorm 30 points 18h ago
Remember when threatening to kill people was illegal? What ever happened with that, anyway?
Fluffy_Somewhere4305 18 points 16h ago
Republicans made a goal of installing record number of republican hard right judges across the country.

Was at a concert last weekend that ended in a bombscare as the headliner was coming out. The front woman from the band that went on just before made a 10-15 second quip about climate change, and I’m convinced that’s what triggered whatever moron called the bombscare to do it
chibinoi 7 points 15h ago
The same fools who threaten people with death threats when climate change, climate crises and global warming are mentioned, are the same buffoons who will complain about “how unusually ____ the weather’s been, lately!”

So why wasn’t this person sending death threats arrested and charged?

>the author of the emails was eventually tracked down and handed a small fine. “The death threat was concerning enough to be the catalyst to us leaving,”

So,... now we know that Republicans won't do anything about domestic terrorism,...

How long til these fucks burn down internet infrastructure as witchcraft?

Actually wait these kinds of idiots already attacked cellular internet infrastructure during the height of 5G hysteria.

The internet is how the grifters deliver their conspiracy theories to these loonies. They won't let that cash flow stop now.
Reacher-Said-N0thing 9 points 15h ago
There's a thread on /r/canada about how we have just set a record, 10 million hectares burned, 2.7% of all the trees in Canada were burned this year. 2.7%.

Half of the top upvoted comments are about "this is because of poor forestry management practices" and "yeah but some people will try to tell you it's because of climate change".

I think we're at the point where these people would rather die, or threaten to kill someone else apparently, than have an angry blue haired hippie be right about something.

Funny thing about conservatives. They are going to be enjoying the cost of their ignorance along with everyone else. Whether they choose to believe it or not...

But when it happens, they will blame everybody else.

We are a few votes away from having another conservative administration. And an angry, armed rebellion with it. These are not idle threats, because people who think this way are particularly susceptible to taking violent action when goaded by figureheads. There are so many facts that are being banned from discussion in many parts of the US.
Malcolm_Morin 8 points 19h ago
Anytime someone denies climate change or makes threats like this, air drop them in an area currently suffering from climate change. Heat dome, flood, doesn't matter. Their tune will change quick.
