Iran's morality police to resume headscarf patrols (bbc.com)
submitted 19h ago by Chooch-Magnetism
QristopherQuixote 322 points 19h ago
It’s time for the Iranian people to overthrow their tyrannical government. They have lived under this religious oligarchy for too long.
Chooch-Magnetism [OP] 243 points 19h ago
They've tried more than once, but the Iranian leadership is seemingly willing to kill, imprison, and torture however many it takes to silence them.
QristopherQuixote 67 points 19h ago
The “morality police” may be the last straw. We’ll see. Almost every Iranian family I have known based in the US since grad school has stopped having their women and girls wear head scarves.
Traditional-Flow-344 80 points 18h ago
The morality police have been around for a long, long time.
thegooniegodard 122 points 18h ago
And in the US they're called Republicans.
8-bit-Felix 30 points 18h ago
Morality police have been a thing in Middle East countries for centuries, it's nothing new for the citizens.

edit: replaced Arab for ME
nastyleak 12 points 18h ago
Iranians aren’t Arabs.

So have the west. Spanish inquisition
threeamthots 1 points 11h ago
The morality people has existed in Iran since the beginning of the current regime, unfortunately. And many Iranian families have never had to stop having women and girls wear headscarves, because many Iranians never wore them to begin with due to personal choice, being non-religious, or following a different religion.
jonathanrdt 15 points 19h ago
‘Something of peace.’
Ok-Brush5346 11 points 17h ago
The regime was born from a revolution. The IRGC know how revolutions work and how to quash them.
Surfing_Ninjas 12 points 11h ago
Yup, if Iran never got taken over by the religious radicals there's a good chance they would be a world super power, or at least have a quality of life for the average person that nears it. Looking back at the culture of Iran prior to the revolution it wasn't that far off from countries like the US and the UK
SufficientWeek7142 3 points 9h ago
Instead the US (and UK) are moving closer to becoming like Iran. Conservatives building theocracies.
lynx_and_nutmeg 2 points 1h ago
"Why don't the oppressed population just stop being oppressed?" Wow, why didn't they think of that? Someone should tell them.
QristopherQuixote 1 points 1h ago
It would seem "fuck off" is the best response at this point and time.
MrMegaPants 0 points 2h ago
How do you propose they do that?
QristopherQuixote 1 points 2h ago
Mass protests and a mass mobilization. A secular version of an arab spring moment. If enough of the country rises up, the government won't stand a chance.
The_Possessor 19 points 15h ago
Finally, focusing on the important things: hair.

The women who work on this squad are like Nazi collaborators
lovingblooddevil 27 points 15h ago
They’ve been assaulting, kidnapping and torturing women without hijab since the protests started. Just because the IR’s state media says the patrols have been resumed don’t mean they were ever stopped.
LuckyandBrownie 96 points 18h ago
Everyone is eager for people in other countries to protest and overthrow their oligarchs and tyrants, but when they look at their own country they’re meh.
Rumpullpus 9 points 9h ago
Pretty sure they would be saying the same thing if they had a morality police force straight up kidnapping and killing people. I know I wouldn't but up with that in my country.

But hey let's not let facts stop us from good old whataboutsim.
Chooch-Magnetism [OP] 17 points 18h ago
I'm sure that has nothing to do with the notion that Iran is a much worse place to live for the people protesting than whichever other countries you have in mind?
lynx_and_nutmeg 0 points 1h ago
Ah yes, the "if things were bad enough, someone would have done something already, if they haven't, it means things aren't that bad yet" fallacy.
Chooch-Magnetism [OP] 1 points 12m ago
Nothing intelligent, mature, or accurate has ever followed, "Ah yes".
crackhousebob 22 points 17h ago
I'm in Canada and there is a growing movement to overthrow our brutal dictator Justin Trudeau.
NeedlessPedantics 32 points 14h ago
“Brutal dictator Justin Trudeau”

This *is* sarcasm… right?
NeatoNico 9 points 15h ago
“Brutal dictator”, surely.

Compared to Iran, most Canadians (outside of the natives) know discomfort, not oppression.
HugeAnalBeads 1 points 46m ago
First I've heard of being a brutal dictator. I would've thought it would be more along these lines:

https://globalnews.ca/news/9230056/food-bank-usage-canada-all-time-high-report/

>The cost-of-living crisis is creating a homelessness crisis on the scale of Canada’s largest natural disasters. In a sample of 14 communities with quality data, 79 per cent saw increases in chronic homelessness since 2020, with overall increases averaging 34 per cent. 74 per cent of Canadians report that homelessness is increasing in their communities.

https://caeh.ca/budget-2023-ignores-canadas-worsening-housing-and-homelessness-crises-fails-to-support-those-in-greatest-need/

In addition to his numerous ethics violations, egregious immigration and TFW policy, and just being an absolute shit PM for the working class.
okaythennews -11 points 12h ago
It’s spelt Justin Castreau.
Havryl 17 points 15h ago
Iran's people deserve better than the Islamic Republic. Having the word "morality" attached to this group is laughable.
Dysfunction_Is_Fun 67 points 19h ago
Florida and Texas foaming at the mouth to follow suit.

For those who aren’t aware, the headscarf patrols are basically an excuse for Iranian morality police to sexually harass women. It’s not a coincidence that they’re often arresting young women and detaining them for just a few hours- they grab women off the streets, have their fun, and then cut them loose.

Reporting sexual assault is a sensitive issue in many Middle Eastern countries, with women who admit to being victims of sexual assault often being considered damaged goods or dishonored. The Islamic legal system of Iran also creates a dynamic where a male rapist’s testimony has greater weight than a female victim’s testimony in the absence of any other witnesses- this system also compels female morality police to not intervene against male officers.
RichardTheLarge 5 points 6h ago
Keep bringing em into your countries. Theyll change once they arrive I swear. Is Islam right about women?
steveschoenberg 2 points 4h ago
Headscarf patrol, when parking enforcement is too difficult.
Groomsi 2 points 4h ago
Are they allowed rainbow scarfs?
DamonFields 7 points 16h ago
To warn us that voting MATTERS.
alwaysmyfault 2 points 15h ago
It has been a while since I've heard anything about the headscarf stuff in Iran.

I'm assuming that women went back to wearing them? Or are they continuing to not wear them, and the government is continuing to kill them?
x31b -4 points 16h ago
This is the government they picked.

They had a moderate, western-focused secular dictator and overthrew him for a fundamentalist Islamic theocracy.

So, this is what they asked for.

If they want something else, they can fight for it, as they have blamed the West for the government they chose.
thisvideoiswrong 24 points 13h ago
There's nothing "moderate" about disappearing political opponents. It was a brutal dictatorship installed by MI6 and the CIA because we just couldn't have an elected socialist threatening the profits of oil companies. And who knows, maybe if Reagan hadn't interfered the result of the revolution might have been more positive. But Republicans will commit any crime to win the presidency.
kilo73 3 points 2h ago
Well can they do it again, but this time good? pls and thanks, MI6/CIA.
dIoIIoIb 0 points 5h ago
"They" As if the women involved had any saying in the matter, as if 100% of the country had been behind the government at any point
olddawg43 0 points 16h ago
Why don’t they just pay other people to Snitch on them for a reward like the antiabortion people are doing in the red/Al Qaeda states?
astoundingSandwich 0 points 9h ago
keep voting up hard right republicans and soon enough we'll have them here

There’s a country with an actual need for the 2nd amendment.

In a couple years there will be another set of large protests in Iran, reddit will get all hot and bothered about it, it will eventually lead nowhere, and Iranians will still be stuck in the shit. As is tradition
Githzerai1984 0 points 2h ago
What a bunch of insecure losers

Downvoted? Hahahahhahahahaha way to prove my point.
jaeduet -4 points 13h ago
They do sex with head??
PPQue6 -50 points 19h ago
Boy those protests sure did a lot of good eh?

Oh yeah reddit you're right the protest were so effective...fucking idiots.
Natomiast 6 points 10h ago
basicaly you're right, but try to express your "told ya" statement in more subtle way, you know, they're idiots and take your words personnaly

btw *protest* against reddit changes was exactly as effective as iranian
Muffin_Bunny19C 1 points 15m ago
I'm curious how exactly do you think a dictatorship falls?

4 months of protesting?
billpalto 1 points 2h ago
Nothing says sacred religion like the suppression of women. Morality police, like the Iranian and Saudi forces, display the bankruptcy and cruelty of their "religion".

Of course, it is not just Islam. I've been in Israel when Israelis stoned a city bus because an Israeli woman wouldn't wear a head scarf and move to the back of the bus.
BartlettMagic 1 points 26m ago
right, because what most redditors and people fail to realize IRL is that governments are extremely patient. the Iranian government just has to wait out whatever protests, and resume business as usual.
