Traffic stopped on Crimean Bridge, reports of blasts(reuters.com)

People reported hearing explosions. Russian outlets are reporting and there are some still pictures. One section of the bridge has sustained significant damage. Parents and a child were killed in the explosion.
Last time there was damage to the bridge \[last October\] that the Russians claimed was coordinated by the Ukrainians; the Russians started attacking all the infrastructures in Ukraine that they had previously left untouched.
This time I hope Ukraine is prepared and ready to respond to any forth coming attacks \[defensive or offensive\].
Edited for typo.

Apparently it was a family going on vacation to Crimea.
I can’t imagine the kind of propaganda that you’d have to ingest to rationalize a family trip to an active theater of war.
Hygochi17 points8h ago
Might not even be the propaganda. Crimea was seeing lower tourist numbers for obvious reasons, so it could be simply "what's the odds" + cheap vacation.
Ukraine hasn't been indiscriminately bombing Crimea, so one could make the decision that the odds of being hit by a missle or drone to be extremely small. For example, while I don't obviously have stats to prove it, I would easily put money on the bigger risk being a non-war related car accident.

Yeah, buy, having to go over the one bridge...
AVLThumper6 points1h ago
Why are they attacking defenseless bridges? Shouldn't they be focusing on schools, hospitals, apartments, or other civilian areas like the Russians? Fuck Russia.
Truck bomb! This may have been a new weapon they got.
y7vc4 points10h ago
Yeah, I just saw that it apparently partially collapsed, this is the real deal.
phiwong18 points11h ago
a) Might not have had the weapon to do so. It is quite a distance and is a large and probably fairly solidly built structure. So the weapon would have to have long range, large payload and be pretty accurate.
b) It is a bit symbolic and strategic (at best). Although inconvenient, there are still road and rail lines available to Russia on the southern side of Ukraine. One strike (unless a HUGE payload) will do minimal damage that can be repaired in a few days. So to disrupt the bridge long term would need a lot of long range weaponry and probably sustained strikes. There is no point wasting weaponry if the disruption doesn't immediately contribute to some particular war aim.

If I can find the map again I'll post it but basically for rail network there's only two lines into Crimea.
One is within 155mm range of Ukrainian lines, the other is that bridge.
Also if they want to allow Russian Civ's to flee then damaging the bridge enough to only being foot traffic is the best option, as it does remove that logistics route for heavy vehicles but still allows people to flee.
(The video seems to be taken from a train crossing the bridge.)
Ravenid1 points2h ago
Due to the nature of the bridge it would need a precision weapon to properly do long range damage.
Probably a Storm Shadow.
megachirops95 [OP]5 points11h ago
unsure, perhaps preparations to push the assault.
ClarifyDust7 points10h ago
this sounds like a response that mr spock would provide
amleth_calls13 points9h ago
Would Spock say “unsure”? I feel like he would have gone with “uncertain”. I’ll see myself out…

1. You want to give them a place to retreat with. If that is gone they fight to the death.
2. They also have to defend it. If its gone all that equipment and personnel can be sent else where.
3. Crimea is going to be a tough nut to crack so even if they could level the bridge from shore to shore the Crimea liberation is going to take giant campaign. Kicking them out of upper Ukraine is a more urgent need right now
agjios2 points3h ago
That death will come pretty quick when they can’t get supplies.
Plus, you’re forgetting that they can surrender.
Kjartanski1 points8h ago
Or, you cut off Crimea, retake the Eastern Oblasts this year, build up and take Crimea next spring while depleting Russian logistics over the winter
Galaxy_Ranger_Bob1 points44m ago
That bridge is a *long* way behind the front line of the main battles. And the bridge is very well protected by air to ground weaponry to prevent an air attack. Ukraine has very little in the way of power projection on the Black Sea right now, so that leaves going there in person, by land, to blow up the bridge. Not an easy task.
This happening now, however, is a blow to Russian logistics, and will reduce the fighting effectiveness of troops stationed in Crimea.

Looking forward to when that infernal bridge is on the sea floor.
