Mystery object: police warn public away from huge cylinder washed up on Australian beach (theguardian.com)
submitted 9h ago by Superbuddhapunk
ishpatoon1982 560 points 9h ago
This was solved today in r/space. It is a tank off of a space rocket.
Matttthhhhhhhhhhh 45 points 2h ago
It's always space junk. Always.
ArchmageXin 18 points 1h ago
Darn, I was hoping it was the Nuke US dropped in Georgia but couldn't find it.

Wouldn't it be a story of how a little nuke that went to see the world :D

.
Gubbi_94 10 points 1h ago
In reality it was a next level marketing ploy for Oppenheimer
ArchmageXin 1 points 58m ago
Quick! Someone photoshop a nuclear weapon with 100+ flags sticked to its sides.
insomniasureshot 1 points 1h ago
We have one like that out here in NC, scary stuff to think about.
ArchmageXin 1 points 59m ago
I think that one was found, they dropped it on top of a Farm and injured some farmers. The explosives went off but not the Nuke itself.

I think the scariest one I heard was we almost nuked Russia because some Engineer cross the wire between "Bear on Base" and "The Russians are attacking"....and only reason the world didn't end cause the Bombers noticed Seattle wasn't a nuclear crater.
h8speech 79 points 9h ago
You did it, Reddit?
Candid-Piano4531 29 points 4h ago
…a space rocket made from alien materials.
dreamtofalligators 42 points 3h ago
it's from India https://www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/1515q3w/found\_on\_a\_beach\_in\_western\_australia/
Abradolf1948 22 points 2h ago
Close enough
Skeptic_Sinner 26 points 4h ago
Guys is it really made from Obamium 😰😰
Someshortchick 54 points 3h ago
Thanks Obamium
graveybrains 3 points 2h ago
I saw it in r/whatisthisthing yesterday, too. I wonder who won that space race
Galaxy_Ranger_Bob 1 points 54m ago
This makes the warnings to stay away a *good* thing, because the solid fuel, and the residue it leaves behind, is very toxic.
VoiceOfRonHoward 1 points 54m ago
I mean if I were a transformer, that's the most logical form I would take until things blow over.
IlluminatedPickle -14 points 2h ago
Any halfwit with half an interest in rocketry knows that. We want to know where it's from.
opuntina 18 points 2h ago
India. They already did this. Keep up.
IlluminatedPickle -11 points 2h ago
That's where it's *suspected* to be from. We still have no official confirmation that I've seen.
BLRNerd 95 points 5h ago
Rita's inside don't open it
thrax_mador 40 points 4h ago
Quick. Find five teens with attitude.

RIP Jason David Frank.
Superbuddhapunk [OP] 99 points 9h ago
Not much of a mystery:

>Its unusual shape, colour and the state of its wear and tear have led many on social media to speculate that it could be from the third stage of India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket, but that is yet to be confirmed by officials.
Vectorman1989 41 points 4h ago
Liquid fuelled rockets run on some horrible stuff like Hydrazine, so it's probably not a good idea to mess around with space junk like this.
IlluminatedPickle 11 points 2h ago
Fire department had a look and said it was safe for humans so I'm pretty sure there's no fuel left in it. Especially considering the growth on the surface of it. Its been in the water for a long time.
echaffey 1 points 26m ago
Nearly all of them don’t use hypergols as their primary propellant source, mostly just China. Some companies use small amounts for upper stage thrusters or on the escape pod thrusters (SpaceX) but it’s small in quantity.

Most rockets are fueled by hydrogen, kerosene or now methane.
fetustasteslikechikn 1 points 3m ago
No sir, incorrect. The LVM3 is the rocket that just launched ISRO's Chandrayaan-3, and the main stage is hypergolic. There are quite a few main launch vehicles out there still using hypergolics, not just China.
MukdenMan 44 points 6h ago
That’s just an old crapper tank, folks
InevitableFly 28 points 4h ago
Space shitter is full

That’s a space peanut
SceptileArmy 4 points 3h ago
It’s a Chinese spy pontoon.
Zarxon 1 points 44m ago
Some say space rocket, but if Joe Dirt has taught me anything; it’s a septic tank.
dimmufitz 1 points 36m ago
You ate off it!
biko77 3 points 4h ago
Only a four sided key can open it…
Schuben 1 points 3h ago
They determined the arctic was too fuckin cold to shoot a movie so they moved it to Australia. And now Tom Cruise has more opportunities to run around like a fuckin maniac on the beach.
biko77 1 points 2h ago
…Part Two
Skurrio 1 points 2h ago
LPL disagrees. Twice, just to show that it's not a Fluke.
2nd-Hand-Butt-Plug 3 points 2h ago
If it has a lid and it starts unscrewing... **RUN!!!**

And here I thought it was that Nuke US dropped in Georgia.

sillyquestionsdude 2 points 3h ago
It's been in the sea floating for quite a some time judging by the crusting below the water line
xGenocidest 4 points 3h ago
Someone posted on here about this earlier, and a woman had a hand all on the side of it.

Not it!
Pilotom_7 3 points 4h ago
Could be put in a Museum …
Drcfan 1 points 4h ago
India, its their rocket fuel tank
IlluminatedPickle 1 points 2h ago
Well, given our track record we'll probably ceremonially fine the space agency who built it.

Hold onto your space agency budgets, this could be a blowout.
Qweesdy -2 points 5h ago
Check for rich corpses - could be an early OceanGate prototype submarine.
Narstak 1 points 3h ago
Rocket tank was my fist guess
Muffin-Sprinkles 1 points 2h ago
This could be the start of a good anime
rOckNrOllsCar11 0 points 4h ago
Thought that missing radioactive cylinder was finally found but I get the sense that no one gaf.
lapisferrum 6 points 4h ago
They found and recovered that radioactive cylinder the month after it was lost.
rOckNrOllsCar11 2 points 4h ago
Oh good. Thanks
lapisferrum 3 points 3h ago
Yep no problem. I actually forgot it happened until I read your comment
Letos12thDuncan 0 points 3h ago
Can this cylinder get stuck in an M&M minis tube?
Sucih -2 points 3h ago
It’s a weather controller from the dome
The simulation is broken
UnclePuma 0 points 1h ago
Oh god this is how War of the Worlds began
SolitaireEvenfall 0 points 1h ago
Of course, f’n junk from India.
Krian_Muldoon -16 points 5h ago
It could be from MH370, It looks like a lavatory tank from a 777.
IlluminatedPickle 2 points 2h ago
Looks literally nothing like a tank from a plane lmao.

Wait, I suppose they do share one characteristic in that they're both cylindrical.
Krian_Muldoon -2 points 2h ago
https://storage.googleapis.com/mcp_236blog/uploads/2017/03/Blogpaulpoep2.jpg. Its from KLMs web site
IlluminatedPickle 3 points 2h ago
Which again, looks *nothing* like the thing that washed up on the beach. Even the size is wrong lmao.
otter111a 1 points 1h ago
Mum, dad. It’s evil, don’t touch it!
Boomape1956 1 points 33m ago
This is how the war of the worlds started.
