Answer: This is to increase the US troop NATO presence in Europe amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine. My guess is that it's a deterrent or there's an imminent threat that we don't know about and may never, until it happens. Let's hope for the former, not the latter.

Unlikely, the maximum allowed to be called from this order is 3000 so they likely are looking for specific jobs in higher demand.

Vietnam started with just a handful of US advisors. There will be more call ups, more troops, and eventually, total commitment. Be lucky not to end up two smoldering, irradiated nations.

There are around 800k selected reserve members. This executive order is for up to 3k. Chances are low and depends on their job. Probably mostly army too I would imagine.

I had a veteran explain it to me and my understanding is that these are different classes of reserve, more active, not your typical 1 weekend a month guys.

It's the opposite. IRR soldiers do less annual training than a typical reservist.

Every order like this has included the IRR even if they don't need them. Even when trump gave an order like this for his covid response the IRR was included in the wording. The main people that are going to be selected are the Selected Reserve which are the weekend a month guys.

IRR is capped at 450 for this call up. So most of those called up will be from the selected reserve, i.e. unit service members.

No, replacing acitve duty so they can get some rest for a while is normal and part of the job.
