What’s up with these TikTok videos of attractive women reacting to emojis? (self.OutOfTheLoop)
submitted 2d ago by gotchabrah
This isn't some veiled criticism of the current state of social media; I'm genuinely curious what this is. I've seen a few posts on twitter of what I assume to be tiktok videos of conventionally attractive (albeit filtered to death) women reacting to food emojis that are sent to them in a live stream.

Like, someone sends an ice cream emoji and they say 'ice cream mm mmm mmm' or something.
I guess l'm curious as to how this came about. Do people pay to send these emojis or something? Like, are these ladies getting paid per emoji, and this is just a new way to cash in on social media? No judgement to the women doing these things, if there's a market, exploit it, but I feel very out of the loop with what's going on here.

ANSWER:

MyCherryCrush/CherryCrushTV, specifically, is a longtime camgirl/OnlyFans type/cosplayer/sex worker. Her latest move is into being what’s called a “Tamagotchi GF,” inspired by Chinese and Korean social media participants who do something similar.

The trend is inspired by “gacha” games on mobile, which offer fanservice-heavy and subserviently-portrayed characters, colloquially known as “waifus,” as random (or “gachapon,” referring to the vending machine-like nature) purchases.

These characters are animated using Live2D to simulate breathing and rippling hair/fabric, as well as in most circumstances a rudimentary form of “jiggle physics” animating things like breasts and hips.

To loop this back around into the point, MyCherryCrush does this based on the idea of the Tamagotchi - a portable pet-like character that responds to the items you give it using predetermined responses. For example, you can feed or play with your Tamagotchi and get the same response every time, however, the Tamagotchi bobs around the screen in an idle animation when not being interacted with.

Therefore, as a “Tamagotchi GF”, she bobs around in an idle animation, then responds to gifts given on the livestream using predetermined responses (“mm ice cream,” etc.)

This has inspired copycats, naturally, as where there’s money there’s people who try to secure the bag. She’s basically live-streaming being a waifu, occasionally jiggling her breasts, and she doesn’t even have to strip or insert anything into herself to rake in the money.

It’s a good grift, all things considered.
Dogg2698 298 points 2d ago
Not only that but they get a small percentage of each emoji performed on live. Each emoji has its own cost, so when a user redeems the emoji, the creator gets some of that money.
gotchabrah [OP] 87 points 2d ago
I figured that was the case.
StoicallyGay 5 points 1d ago
Also I'd say a good portion of the girls who do this are painfully self aware. It's weird but the girls are just tryna make a quick buck and they do make bank.

Saw a tiktok of a girl who was reacting to these like "these girls are making THOUSANDS a month, of yal see me out here doing this just know it's because of the bag." Then she proceeds to do this a few days later and made $700 in a single night.

Saw another girl who was doing this all cutesy or whatever I guess and out of nowhere broke character because an emoji kept getting spammed which exhausted her since her "reaction" to that emoji was pretty active. It was pretty funny because she switched from her barbie doll whatever voice to her deeper urban accent.

For the record I don't watch these and they've never popped on my feed, but strangely enough it was only today that I had a few videos reacting to these pop up.

Good lord, what a freaking response - you’re awesome! This is exactly what I was hoping to find by posting here. Thanks so much for taking the time to take it up.

Honestly, it’s fascinating. Totally agree - I respect the hustle. If there’s a market for this, then make that money. I’m very much out of the loop with respect to the latest internet trends, so to my old(ish) eye it seems pretty weird, but I get it from both sides. It seems a bit dark and black mirrorish, but all things considered it seems pretty harmless. And I bet the ladies are cleaning up! Also, I remember when tamagotchis took over the world when I was little. Haven’t thought about them in a long time, so that was a nice trip down memory lane.

Thanks again for your insight! You provided exactly what I was hoping to learn and then some.

Of all the trends weve seen from social media lately... at least this one isnt killing anybody.

In my experience, Tamagotchis died all the time. But I’m sure her fans are more attentive than I was with mine!

It was 97, we had a lot of stuff to do. Ride our bikes. Dig random holes to China. Discover waterlines in the process. Get pushed out of trees and break our wrist. We had a lot of stuff going on! Like I’m supposed to remember to feed a keychain egg!

Yeah, tamagotchis are cool, but have you ever fed one… after midnight?
Slight0 121 points 2d ago
I mean when 80% of female streamers are e-girl/onlyfans types, it's not exactly a positive trend for kids to be exposed to particularly. Even flipping through tiktok streaming all the dudes are doing a variety of things and you have most the girls selling looks/sex. It's really sad to see to be honest. Y'all hype it up like it's empowerment too, I really don't get where people's heads are at any more.
Soundwave_47 102 points 2d ago
People seem to be ignoring the effects this has on young girls' self-esteem and body image.
tryfam 25 points 2d ago

Pecncorn1 11 points 2d ago
Yikes! I would say not. I googled her out of curiosity and her YT channel has 1.4 million subscribers and her latest video was on how to use Nair to remove the hair from her bum hole....To be fair she must be really smart because she put on gloves to apply it. I don't even know what to think anymore other than we are lost as a species.
t0mRiddl3 5 points 1d ago
Yeah, this is beyond fucked up. Your kids will all grow up watching and copying this. Good luck
Skylighter 1 points 2d ago
It's not the responsibility of people making this content to stop.

It's the responsibility of people in charge of kids to raise them better.
sgtmattie -8 points 2d ago
If that’s what is showing up on your tiktok feed, that says more about you than it does about women content creators, because I see a very small minority of women selling looks/sex.
elv8me -16 points 2d ago
Please don’t downplay their success.
Regardless of the content, financial independence is something to boast about.
And if a kid is exposed to r-rated content, it’s on the parents or guardians to be vigilant. That is an entirely different issue.

Statistically speaking, *one* lady is cleaning up and the vast majority aren't getting jack shit. Basically like all internet content.
RindFisch 3 points 1d ago
I mean, that's like all even remotely artisy content ever, even pre-internet. The vast majority of musicians and actors also barely get by, while the top 1% rake in millions.
TomatoFuzz 15 points 2d ago
I mean I been on that app for years and….

I never came across sex workers or egirls on my for you page. So i feel it isn’t a trend among most people.

Tbh "black mirror ish" is exactly what sprung to mind when I read the above explanation. Sure on the grand scheme of things it seems harmless and it's not killing anyone (yet) but something about it just creeps me out.

I can’t believe I just watched that entire 25 minute video about this. But it’s exactly what I asked for, so thank you! It certainly makes me feel better that someone who’s apparently very up-to-date with internet trends was also confused.

Seems like it went from a very niche under the radar type thing, to going super viral all over the place. My twitter space is also very niche and tailored to my profession, and when I see the people I follow start posting about it, I know it’s spread far and wide. Because the twitter world I occupy isn’t in the same galaxy as these folks. So I it caught my attention when these folks were commenting on it.

Anyway, thanks for sending, super timely that he did a deep dive into it.

It’s funny to me that “respect the hustle” is always the go to phrase when someone is making money in morally questionable ways.
gotchabrah [OP] 2 points 1d ago
Haha, shit that’s not wrong. I guess I’ve never realized that. Certainly how I’ve always used it… obviously
TryinToBeLikeWater 2 points 20h ago
Why is this morally questionable…? It’s dudes spending money of their own volition on a sex worker.
FabulousPenalty7985 0 points 20h ago
Because it's clearly taking advantage of lonely people and promoting a very unhealthy form of interaction.

It's basically like being a drug dealer. You can argue that the people who buy the drugs are voluntary participants but it's clearly taking part in a bad system for personal financial gain.

Bridalhat 3 points 2d ago

I feel old as fuck that kids nowadays don't know what Tamagotchi are. The devastation when your pet died :'(

Fun (fatalistic?) fact, the old Tamagotchi pets would die after a certain time no matter what you did - yes, that's right, they programmed the inevitability of death into a 8bit pet for kids.
-WhoWasOnceDelight 49 points 2d ago
I kept mine alive for almost a month thanks to adhd-fueled hyperfocus. The last week or so was misery, and it went from full health to dead when I took an afternoon nap.

I also tried explaining this Tamagotchi GF thing to my husband when he asked what I was laughing at. His first response was, "So, they die?"
hell2pay 8 points 2d ago
Adhd hyperfocus... Is this a thing? Cause I have a lot of markers, I've noticed for adhd but I absolutely hyperfocus on whatever 'it' thing is for me in the moment.

Stimulants never really seemed to fix that part, only made it worse.

Like I'll take on a hobby, get full on into it then drop it completely 3 months later. Or I'll be on reddit for a very unhealthy amount of time, but will get sucked into reading comments on one thread for hours, even if they are repetitive.

I don't know if these things are neurologically related, but I do know it all affects my executive functioning ability.
AlyssaurusWrecks 5 points 2d ago
as somebody whose ADHD is debilitating: that sure sounds like ADHD!
NateRiver03 3 points 2d ago
Do you have other symptoms like emotional dysregulation, spacing out or being hyperactive and not being able to sit still?
Mekanimal 2 points 2d ago
A strategy I've found really useful for regulating my AuDHD hyperfixations:

Build a "circle of interests" that consist of tangentially related topics, interests, hobbies and goals. Then, arrange the interests in such a way that the growth of one feeds the interest in the next.

I'll go over mine as an example:

Guitar Playing > Music Production > Procedural Audio/Audio Plugin Design > Programming > Video Gaming > Guitar

What I've found really useful is it allows me to identify that I don't have space for other primary hobbies or interests in my circle. No matter how many times I get distracted when I return to an interest, I've grown in ways that compliment it.

They do sell a few new kinds in the US too. I've seen R2 D2 themed ones at the store. And I saw a few popular anime themed ones at Barnes and Noble, but they might have been imports, they sell a lot of imported figures and things.

> Fun (fatalistic?) fact, the old Tamagotchi pets would die after a certain time no matter what you did - yes, that's right, they programmed the inevitability of death into a 8bit pet for kids.

Suppose this makes sense...cf. the economics of selling you a refrigerator that lasts for 40 years vs a "disposable" one that lasts for 5-10 now.

Even better when you can somewhat disguise the fact that it's planned obsolescence. At least it was only a $5 (?) luxury gizmo.

It’s super cringe. Her doing it, isn’t nearly as cringey as the pathetic simps who actually pay and request it from her. She’s making money and appealing to what people want to see, and the fact that people want to see this is absolutely weird and sort of sickening.
gotchabrah [OP] 54 points 2d ago
Yea I don’t blame the women doing this in the least bit. If there’s a bunch of thirsty dudes willing to throw money at you for acting like a tamagotchi, then more power to them. The dude’s on the other hand, I dunno. It’s really more sad than anything else I guess.
AndrewEpidemic 89 points 2d ago
Just because there's a market for something doesn't give creators/suppliers carte blanche. IMO everyone involved in this is worse off except for the wallet of the streamer. This is going to reinforce the viewers desires for a subservient, one dimensional sexual item as a partner before they even get to hard porn. Some people like to hail sex workers as feminist icons but I just don't see a way this kind of behavior advances the idea of women as equals at all.
NorthernSalt 47 points 2d ago
The OnlyFans and E-girl economy, if anything, has really revived the chauvinist idea of women as commodities, which even 10 years ago seemed long dead. And from a social economic standpoint, it's sad that so much time and resources are spent on something so mundane.

My personal standpoint is that it makes society worse, it removes us from art and beauty, it hampers equality, it distracts from more useful pursuits, etc. I got to add that I personally find it frustrating that a few of these creators find themselves massively wealthy. I'm saddened that society rewards these behaviors.

Edit: And just to be clear, that a few thousands of young women are throwing away all decency and privacy isn't my main concern. It's the viewers. Millions (?), likely all in their best age to contribute to society, instead sit at home and jerk off.
snug_cat 2 points 2d ago
I’m an OnlyFans model and an anarchist; I really think the only way to create a more equal society is through socialism. Women will necessarily be exploited under a capitalist system.
Sadcupcake_uwu 7 points 2d ago
Half of those who are simping for her probably weren’t even alive when the Tamagotchi was a thing. Wait…is Tamagotchi *STILL* a thing??? I remember getting one in some Happy meal or something back in the late 90s… lol
StreicherG 10 points 2d ago
Tamagotchi fan here. Of the original, not this new Girl-a-gotchi thing.

Tamagotchis are still a thing. They even have new ones now that can take pictures, connect to the internet, and “breed” with other tamagotchis to make random babies.

We don’t talk about the BTS boy band tamagotchis…
IntermittentFries 3 points 2d ago

Instead of people trying to get anime girls to act like people, were now trying to get humans to act like waifu’s as much as possible, complete with an idle animation. We’ve gone full circle.

Answer: TikTok has a live streaming feature. During the live stream you can click a button to open up a tray with a bunch of gifts you can give the streamer. The gifts are all virtual. You buy them, give them to the streamer, TikTok and the streamer split the money.

Some gifts are super cheap, like roses, and have equivalently crappy on screen animations. More expensive ones like sunglasses actually enable a filter to put sunglasses on the streamer.

The most expensive ones will entirely take over the screen with things like an animation of the Taipei 101 tower shooting fireworks. Streamers react big and share videos of getting them because the biggest prizes are worth a lot of money.
starfox99 39 points 2d ago
How much money are we talking for all this stuff??
blaxative 72 points 2d ago
I saw a video about another TikTok live-streamer thing where some of the emoji gifts can be pretty expensive. The lady on the video kept telling her viewers she needed each of them to give her a lion so she could pay rent or something and those lions were worth like 400$ each

A rose costs 1 coin to give. The golden gate bridge costs 7,999 coins. A whale animation costs 30,000 coins. Coins are sold in packs. You can buy 5 coins for 7 cents, 17,500 coins for $249.99.

Answer: I'm not a fan of the top level answers focusing mostly on fetishes and the idea of "controlling women" so I want to give a more nuanced answer about the TikTok livestream economy.

When we look at TikTok lives, many of the unique ones are all about getting pennies from people (since the gifts go that cheap) and the occasional dollars if they're lucky/smart enough. There will be lives that are just polls labeled "donate X gift for Trump/Y gift for Biden" or "donate to make me restart the game" or "donate to play loud noises while I'm sleeping" or "donate to have spawn an NPC with your profile picture to try and survive this automated tower defense game and have your picture standing in the middle," etc. TikTok has a strong basis of getting a steady flow of content and many of the livestreams will allow you to donate a very small amount (again, pennies) for essentially immediate feedback and a *quick dopamine hit

While yes, in this particular example, there is a sexual aspect to it, NPC streaming is more akin to ASMR in that the sense that it's a genre that goes broader than sex. The trend started with Japanese tiktokers and a few that I've seen felt more akin to performance art (actually mimicking an NPC with limited animations) and there would be even face offs between characters. A good example of someone who successfully does NPC streaming for goofy purposes rather than lewd is Japanese TikToker Satoyu0704. People donate to see the ridiculous reactions and get the short term cheapo dopamine hit that way.

Finally, this isn't a super new trend, it's been around for at least a year or so at this point, maybe even longer. Tiktok is a weird platform and coverage of things coming out of there usually has an air of outrage associated with it to varying degrees of validity to that outrage. Chances are, on places like Reddit or Twitter or even TikTok itself, you're not getting a complete painted picture on Tiktok as everything is so decentralized and users are all in their own bubbles. Regardless, I hope this answer paints in the pieces that might be missed by other users.

Edit: forgot to finish a sentence.

That kinda sounds like Twitch redeems or what I know of them.
LandFillMedia 12 points 2d ago
In a way, they're similar. Twitch redeems offer that level of interactivity with a stream but a lot of them are free, you redeem stuff with points earned by watching for long periods of time.

Tiktok gifts are all paid for with money (from pennies to dollars) and for the most part, all they do is either show a small image (like a rose), attach to the streamer (like a cowboy hat), play an elaborate animation (like a galaxy or money gun).

Some tiktokers will use the gifts and label certain ones to act as redeems, with the main distinction that you have to pay money to use them.

If you’re gonna make a Twitch comparison it’s more apt to a TTS donation or a gifted sub. The former of which is typically almost completely pocketed by the streamer minus the TTS service’s fee, it regardless has a much better revenue split than the latter, Twitch donos which is also an apt comparison in that it can still be used by the viewer to ingratiate themselves or the streamer to sometimes try and foster a parasocial relationship. Somewhere in between the two since TTS is much more personalized than a gifted sub and isn’t an “in-app purchase” type of deal and a sub is much less personalized but done through in-app means with a significant user/provider revenue split.

Answer:

Did I do it right this time? This sub has the most ridiculous rules.

I'm just gonna take some shots in the dark based on my cursed amount of social media knowledge.

ANSWER 1. It gives the user power over them. Basically you input a command and they do as you say, even if its pre scripted

2. Part of it is outrage bait, even seeing the comments in that video so many are like "wtf" "so cringe". Every comment increases engagement and brings the video to more users, more views = more revenue

3. Thinly veiled softcover fetish porn. This girl is acting like a video game character with her constant movements and bobbing. Animated characters often never stand perfectly still because it encroached on the uncanny valley and reminds you that you're playing a video game, taking you out of your immersion. Translated to real life it looks ridiculous. It's been a growing trend for years.

4. The child like innocence / stupidity draws in lots of children and predators

5. Funny noises / faces is like the height of children's comedy

I’m sorry, you forgot to say “what is” before your answer and have therefore lost this game of Jeopardy. Alex trebek isn’t mad, he’s just very disappointed in you.

You don't get to come back tomorrow! You don't even get a copy of our home game. You're a complete loser!

I downloaded TikTok out of curiosity one day and came across these livestreams of old Indonesian couples (and I mean like 60+ at least), sometimes with kids, who were making repeated weird sounds and movements in response to people sending them stickers. For example there was an old guy who would just go kwekkwekkwekkwek and dance when someone sent a rose. They wouldn't speak otherwise. They looked poor from what I could tell of their living quarters. I just couldn't process what I was watching or why these poor tired old folks would be doing this for hours on end every night. It felt like the dark web version of what this cute girl npc fetish is. I deleted TikTok after having those streams invade my fyp and I felt so dirty and weird afterwards.

1) this sub definitely has ridiculous rules. Took me three damn times to get this posted without being auto-removed. Pretty aggravating.

2) yup, looks like you hit the nail on the head. It seems a little odd to me, but I can understand the drive on both sides of the equation so who am I to judge. Of course with the exception of your point 4. Taking part of this trend because you like having perceived power over a young girl is insanely fucked. hopefully that’s not common.

Anyway, thanks again for your answer. I feel better knowing what this is (except for the reminder that pedophiles are gross).

You need to see what the sub looked like before the rules. If you can come up with a better way to manage the shit show I'm sure they'd love to hear it, but trying to keep a growing sub on-task is actually really fucking hard. All subs converge on the r/pics \+ r/funny singularity if they aren't careful.

I mean, be mad about whatever you wat, natch, but there are in fact reasons for this one.

(A good positive example of why to run things like this is r/AskHistorians . Probably the most common comment in the whole sub is "comment deleted", but the signal to noise ratio in there is phenomenal.)

3 is especially ironic, as the woman pictured has done actual porn for a good while, and she probably makes as much if not more doing things like this. Users buys TikTok gifts for them of different amounts, then converts those to real money with TikTok getting around 50%. Still can rack up a decent amount quickly with little effort.
paprikashi 14 points 2d ago
I mean, if I had to choose between bobbing around like a computer game and eating imaginary ice cream or doing porn, I know which I’d pick
ChecklistRobot 24 points 2d ago
Me too, I’d be sitting on a 3 foot ovipositor with a line of masked German men waiting to piss in my mouth.

Answer: It's a pick me trend for women trying to make money off of the terminally online. Smart play, probably one of the easiest demographics to manipulate into giving their money in exchange for parasocial pleasures. I view it as exploitation of men who really need help, but hey, that's just me.
