What's going on with the situation concerning the Youtuber, Lord Miles Routledge, who went missing in Afghanistan? (self.OutOfTheLoop)
submitted 1d ago by gintas59
I few months back I saw a video that claimed that Youtuber, Miles Routledge, had gone missing in Afghanistan.

Last month I saw a video that claimed that Miles was being held along 2 other British people (around 14:30): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER-1lLh4CeY

I tried searching how the situation developed but wasn't able to find anything new. Does anyone know any information on this topic?

Answer: News of Miles Routledge's disappearance has been scarce since his arrest. However, British NGO The Presidium Network said they believe he is safe and has not been treated inhumanely during his time in Taliban custody.

The YouTuber Miles Routledge brands himself as a "danger tourist" who travels to various war-torn places worldwide. He made headlines during a previous trip to Afghanistan, where he was evacuated from the country shortly after the fall of Kabul in 2021.

Is this really what us humans have devolved too? Putting your own life in **mortal** danger for clicks?

That dude clearly wanted to die though, just wanted some attention while he did it.
sterling_mallory 70 points 21h ago
Had no idea the girl went to jail over that. Really doesn't seem necessary. Whole thing was his idea, he convinced her to do it even though she really didn't want to. She was devastated, lost the father of her child, and it's not as if she'd be a danger to society. *Ideally* she'd know better, but I don't think that flavor of stupid deserves jail.
Clayman8 67 points 1d ago
> He probably won't accept me into the pearly gates because of how stupid this is.

> **because of how stupid this is.**

Well thats just natural selection at this point. Fuck him, well deserved.
kafaldsbylur 1 points 1h ago
I feel like there's a safer way to "see if a .50 cal bullet can go through a book." Like, for example, putting he book on a table and shooting at it. Or putting the book in a vice and shooting at it. Or heck, holding the book at arm's length to the side and shooting at it, while still stupidly dangerous, would still be better
insane_contin 0 points 12h ago
She still made the choice to pull the trigger. Yes, it's a horrible thing that happened to her, but she made that choice to pull the trigger.

>Is this really what us humans have devolved too? Putting your own life in **mortal** danger for ~~clicks~~ money?

Humans have always been this way.

This is probably much less dangerous than joining a mercenary group.
NihiloZero 13 points 23h ago
Probably depends upon when and which mercenary group you're joining. As with many other jobs... many mercenary groups are simply going to try and be paid as much as possible while safely doing as little as possible.

Hi I'm johnny knoxville...
MrShago 20 points 1d ago
I mean we've always been like that. Just before it was with whomever was in front/around you at the time.
Clayman8 7 points 1d ago
I think its the social media effect, before we couldnt record ourselves and spread it online as easily. Now its just...that whole clout thing where doing something terribly stupid can set you up for life as long as enough morons retweet it.
AutumnWisp 8 points 21h ago
Devolved to? Kronk probably dared Grug to pet a saber tooth tiger in 6000 BC.

This isn't new. One of the main motivations for people who did expeditions (e.g. arctic explorers) was the fame and wealth it created for them after they returned.
paperpenises 61 points 1d ago
Steve Irwin did it with animals. Buster Keaton did it with movie stunts. Evil Knievel did it with motorcycles. It's been on ~~brant~~brand for us for a while. Daredevils will always have an audience.
Clayman8 50 points 1d ago
Yeah, but these people were professionals and knew what they were doing in generally monitored and planned conditions, with a back up team of people that could save you should anything go wrong.

Going solo into whats essentially a low-key warzone with nothing but a GoPro and a prayer amounts to either a stupendous, god-tier confidence or a total lack of self-preservation.

Doing dumb things is on brand for humanity at large
impy695 4 points 21h ago
People do it for free all the time
TheMightyChocolate 11 points 1d ago
Not necessarily clicks. Maybe thats how he feels alive. Like people who do Dangerous sports
Clayman8 -5 points 1d ago
One could do dangerous sports instead simply, but instead he decided to be the action movie star and then waste precious man hours and money to get his own dumb ass saved by the government that probably could do something more useful instead.

This just makes me sad.
OneGoodRib 2 points 17h ago
I mean like 120 years ago people were going over Niagara Falls in a barrel just for fame. It's not a new thing that people do dangerous things for attention.
MT_Promises 0 points 21h ago
War correspondents have been doing this for years.

One of the more famous ones was the only civilian photographing the Omaha Beach invasion and eventually stepped on a mine:

charleychaplinman21 17 points 21h ago
Correspondants and photographers are ostensibly going to war zones to bring attention to the war zones. These bozos are going to war zones to bring attention to themselves.
truth-hertz -6 points 1d ago
It's just war videojournalism
Clayman8 18 points 1d ago
I dont think that walking into an orgy with a GoPro would make me a a Porn Director or an expert on sexual relations, so i dont think a moron with a deathwish would count as a War Journalist either :/
joelwitherspoon -4 points 21h ago
Are you seriously asking this question...today? In this world?
TheChimpEvent2020 1 points 21h ago
I wouldn’t look at it that way. There are people out there that love the rush of these experiences and we shouldn’t be shocked. That’s always been a thing.
AE_Phoenix 19 points 1d ago
If he's actually doing some journalism fair enough, it's good to see that shit 1st hand and I respect that. If he's just vlogging and going "look how cool I am" then that's a different matter
donemessedupthistime 37 points 1d ago
It’s 100% the latter
senpaisix 8 points 23h ago
have you ever watched one of his videos? watching britannica they seemed pretty aware of the fact that they shouldn’t be doing that exact thing and they didn’t.
yeeiser -4 points 19h ago
He is one of the few to provide a first hand view of what migrants go through when they cross Mexico and then on to the US after the pandemic. Link
WisestAirBender 5 points 18h ago
There's a reason headlines call him a YouTuber and not a journalist
jaytix1 8 points 20h ago
I've seen his tweets. The guy's a walking 4chan board lol.
bubloseven 7 points 20h ago
Not just resources. Operators are regularly hurt or killed trying to save people in these situations. It’s incredibly disrespectful to them and their families for people like this to make content out of getting caught.
nonhiphipster 33 points 23h ago
He also made headlines for going to Brooklyn and tweeting about how supposed dangerous it is lol
JetAbyss 115 points 1d ago
He's basically an 'edgy' Bald and Bankrupt (tho tbf unlike Baldy, I don't think Miles is a sexpat at least given he's so uppity about being a traditional chaste Catholic so that gives him one extra point, I think? Miles is legit like a weird Catholic fundie who unironically sympathizes with the Taliban on how they treat their women so make that what you will ~~or maybe he's into bacha bazi~~) who travels to less-than-ideal destinations just so he can make political statements about his home country (and Western countries) in general as a strawman. That's basically what he does and what he is in terms of the overall aim of his content. He's not exactly traveling because he wants to explore authentic Afghani culture or try out the best kebab shop in Kabul- nah.

Lemme explain; He traveled to Afghanistan and after his first trip he praised the Taliban for how 'traditional' they are and pretty much wishes that his home country of the UK and Western nations in general adopt a similar regime (replace Islam with Christianity ofc) and pretty much his shtick is that, over and over again with maybe some variation that's still "yeah our liberal Western countries suck so bad lol that even these third world shitholes are better because at least they dont have gay people".

Miles travels to a less-than-ideal destination and says "wow this is a lot better than Birmingham with all those migrants lol" and one time even traveled to New York to pretty much say "yeah man Taliban-Afghanistan is so much safer than NY because it doesn't have n-words infesting the place".

He even got his own autobiography published on Antelope Hill, which is a publishing firm that publishes books that are about fascist ideologies. I'm not kidding or doing a Godwin's Law- they literally sell books written by people like Joseph Goebbels, Horst Wessel, Oswald Mosley, Leon Degrelle, Richard Darre, etc. they definitely aren't your dad's Reagan-era book club that's for sure.

He traveled to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan *multiple* times and pretty much repeats the same gig until he eventually got arrested by the Taliban, possibly because he probably fucked up some sort of Taliban etiquette and they didn't want to risk it. For reference, despite being an avid 'fan' of the Taliban, Miles isn't exactly the most knowledgeable in basic travel etiquette. Literally filmed himself going to a black market gun shop in Afghanistan and toyed around with guns acting like a giddy schoolgirl- it didn't surprise me tbh.

And that's basically the best way I can explain Miles without trying to sound too terminally online. He sorta became an e-celeb or internet celebrity around edgy right-wing parts of the internet who was basically *their* resident travel vlogger ever since the fall of the Islamic Republic in Afghanistan circa Fall 2021. He made appearances on podcasts and collaborated with many YouTubers within this 'edgy' sphere such as Sargon of Akkad (or rather his friend AkkadSecretary but still).

Personally, I'm sure he's probably going to get out soon enough since an NGO said that they're working on it and they did say he's been being treated 'well', though probably going to be through a ransom or trade. The biggest issue is that I'm pretty sure that the Taliban may have jailed him because they might have accused him of being a spy (from their POV; some semi-rich pasty British guy who goes to your 'young' country a lot always filming himself and around him when you're still forming a government is kinda sus ngl) and declared him a possible credible threat to their regime.

Also not gonna lie, some of his content is genuinely interesting since you do actually get to see what post-2021 Afghanistan is like (with a somewhat uncharismatic British man behind the camera) and there really isn't too much who film that stuff but yeah I'm not surprised at all he got arrested since he's kind've a dumbass lol. And that says *a lot* from me! As someone who sometimes indulges in edgy content, Miles is genuinely someone who embodies the phrase 'dumb-luck' and it turns out luck eventually runs out and it ain't pretty.

What the heck is a sexpat
jaytix1 23 points 20h ago
Someone that visits other countries specifically to have sex with the locals. I don't think they're ALWAYS criminals, but the stereotypical sexpat is an old white guy that preys on young Asian girls. As you can guess, nobody likes them.
digital_dysthymia 13 points 20h ago
Someone who travels abroad for sex. Usually pedos.
Smoketrail 9 points 18h ago
A person who makes a new life in a new country with the aim of using their comparative wealth to procure sexual partners.

Often with the implication that they are after women being coerced into sex work or children. Like Andrew Tate.
JesterOfDestiny 3 points 21h ago
People who move to poor countries, in hopes that they can exploit the shitty situations of the people there, to get laid. Andrew Tate is an example, though most sexpats are just simple fuckboys and pick up artists, not actual sex traffickers like Tate. David Bond is another example.
Chanchumaetrius 41 points 1d ago
>I don't think Miles is a sexpat at least given he's so uppity about being a traditional chaste Catholic

Makes it more likely tbh
JetAbyss 34 points 1d ago
He's not your average middle-aged priest. Miles is more like one of those weird terminally online zoomer 'trad Christians' who think sex and anything related to nudity is a sin and only thinks about sex when he's going to marry is tradwife or whatever after careful planning. I think he's legitimately faithful in terms of his religion because that's probably one of the reasons why he's so determined to do all these dangerous travels because from his POV: death ain't a big deal since he's gonna go to heaven and it's a good mixture of religious zeal mixed with being an overconfident youngshit is what drives him tbh.
Polyfuckery 19 points 23h ago
Someone said above that he had a child with a girlfriend which doesn't fit your theory
Chanchumaetrius 5 points 1d ago
What a weirdo
jaytix1 1 points 20h ago
I can't stand trads. Say what you will about Evangelicals, but I'd sooner let a kooky bible thumper into my home than one of those LARPers.
Cowboywizzard 19 points 1d ago
Reddit just served me an ad by a large ISP that says " How to Make your new neighbors love you" right under OP's photo.
flotsam_knightly 59 points 1d ago
Question: If I recall correctly, wasn't this his third visit to the country, all in the name of social media views? He was evacuated on the second trip, insulted a terrorist group (Taliban) when he got home, and then... went back, is now being held prisoner by said group. He willingly risked his life for this stunt, tempted fate, and wants others to potentially pay with their lives.
Chillchinchila1818 7 points 20h ago
No surprise he isn’t a good or smart person

After fleeing the country, Routledge has largely become a Twitter shitposter who has compared Brooklyn to Afghanistan and has also published a book about his time in Afghanistan with Antelope Hill, a company that also publishes fascist and white supremacist literature.

Going into a country, acting like an asshole, and getting harassed by the local authorities is his entire brand. He has published videos about being arrested in Kenya, sneaking across the EU border, and cosplaying as a homeless person by living on the streets of New York City for a whopping 48 hours.
gintas59 [OP] 5 points 22h ago
I thought the evacuation was the first trip, with the second one being a "normal return".

Was he in Afghanistan before the Fall of Kabul?
Raorchshack 6 points 18h ago
IIRC:
He googled the most dangerous places in the world and wanted to visit them, and after doing so he eventually goes to Kabul. A week or so later, the Taliban take over the country and he flees and lives in a UN building or something whilst livestreaming and such.
He is evacuated, but returns later and is arrested.
