Manager won't let barista work shifts at other stores. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by fianni88
My barista told me that our manager contacted her asking if she had picked up an extra shift at another store in our district/area. She had, so my manager told her that "it is not on to work at any other store, or pick up any shift without permission." What is the standard for this kind of situation?

There's not an official policy, *per se*, but I've always found it to be a good practice to *ask* your SM before picking up shifts at other stores.

When I did so, I was always kinda shmoozy about it: "Hey, I know we're short on hours this week/month, and my paycheck's gonna be short, PLEASE can I go try to hustle up some shifts at other stores?"

Never had a problem after that.

TLDR; SMs don't like to be outta the loop.

I don't know the official policy other but I've never heard of it being a problem as long as you don't go into overtime. I know sometimes when other stores need help, my manager will schedule some of us at those locations but usually only the strong or experienced partners.

The barista in question is not in OT, she's actually been getting less hours lately, so she wanted to pick some up.

Then there shouldn't really be an issue. The biggest thing is like u/monkeyeighty8 said, SMs like to be in the loop. I would maybe just shoot a quick texting saying "hey I'm picking up a x hour shift at store #____".

Yes, except *call*, as texting is not an approved method of communication (as per the Partner Guide).

FWIW, I think that's an outdated policy...at least with a text, there can be some sort of proof of a conversation...with a call, it can become a "well, I never said that" kind of thing.

What it is is that I think she was irked that it wasn't cleared with her. And also, I know for a fact that your manager has to log the hours you picked up at other stores into labor so it's work for them. Maybe just always be clearing with SM and keep them in the loops. And my favorite line from most SMs when picking up shifts 'Are you gonna go over 40?' So yes, don't go over for 40. If your shifts at the home store and the shifts you picked up combined total at somewhere in the 35 range, it's a good idea not to pick up another one.

duh?

thank you for contributing to the conversation with that. some partners don't track hours and it might just slip their mind. It's just a reminder. I see that you're so smart and have your life together but apparently do not want to share any of it and instead just outright condescend to others. Then just step off. This subreddit is for engaging partners and customers on all things Starbucks. If you are not engaging then get off.

I'm just saying that all barista should know not to go overtime😂 god damn calm your tits
dancing_durian 1 points 6y ago
so you condescend with a simple 'duh?' Now you're treating me like a child with that emoji and even worse 'calm your tits'? Really? Aren't you supposed to be the mature one, who knows everything about picking up shifts and not going over 40? What kind of a language is that for someone who supposedly has their stuffs together? Is this how you achieve power and control over someone by first, not contributing to OP's question, then secondly, seek out a certain comment prime for targeting to treat the commenter like a child? Hope you enjoy your dose of power and control for the day.
