Getting a majority of the dirty work? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by iwantanapplerightnow
Hey there, relatively new (been working full time since the end of august) partner here, looking for some input.

Yes, I know work is work and I honestly don't mind doing the dirty stuff, but what really gets me is that I seem to be the only one doing it, and I'm doing all of if not the majority of it. I feel like the reason I'm kept around is because I do all of the dirty, hard work and don't complain. Most days, I'll have to clean the back, then clean behind the bar or the front, then go for a garbage run and we're a relatively high volume store. (lots of garbage..) I rarely ever see anyone else doing it. I've been trained on till but I havent had any training on bar, though there are partners that have been hired after me that have gotten trained on bar. I think maybe it would be worth mentioning that I only have one male coworker, (I'm a male) and the rest (literally all) of the partners at my store are female. My daily tasks consist of: go on till, clean up (usually three tasks stacked on top of each other) and then customer support. My one other male co worker agrees that this is the case, and says that he's experienced it too. My shift managers are two chinese women who always talk amongst themselves and one of whom seems to have anger issues. They never clean, they just tell others to do it. They don't ask nicely either, which can be expected at the bare minimum if you're going to make someone else do a job NO ONE wants to do. I used to really like going to work.

I think it is how a lot of stores start off new employees. Trust me, I was like the CS/front cashier for like 2 or 3 months before I did anything else. I felt more like a janitor. It just depends on how kucky some people get like I see some people who are new that do every role and the shift say, "they need bar practice!" It's kind of strange but I got the hang of it quick whereas the new employees just barely hired that were given already "bar practice" were super slow. You will have seniority and all the new baristas will be doing what you had to do all the time. You are probably a quick witted person and can handle the pressure of high volume drink orders to make and thats why being the janitor doesn't suit your persona. I know some baristas who have been with starbucks for a year and still are slow on bar. It just depends and sometimes, especially holidays, you will definately wish you were the cashier or CS instead of the barista when the store is a zoo 😂

Honestly when first starting out if you don't seem to be getting on with anything else then you're given work you can handle/are good at. Eventually everyone gets trained on bar in some capacity or another. There are older women at my store who started recently and just aren't good at anything but pos or drive thru so that's where they're put. It's up to the shift to see who they have to work with- and in order to make the shift run smoothly- place people where they'll perform best. Of course you can argue they don't know what else you're capable of until you're trained but really like I said eventually everyone gets it.

Honestly, the fed policy rules of this company are very agreeable. We are all to support and uplift each other.

Sadly, a lot of stores don’t enforce it, and let favoritism, cliches and subtle hostility abound.

It could be as simple as they’re those kinds of people that think men should do all the work.

My first store was horrible. They had me (a female) do ALL the cleaning because the shift leads were all female and for some reason hated me. And they’d pick at it. If I said I was finished, they pull a Cinderella and start in on the “well that spot is still there” etc. and I never said a word. Absolute witches.

It could also be a very good store, and they’re give you time to grasp the basics before you’re thrown into the chaos (in the beginning, that’s what barring is).

I suggest asking a shift lead if you could try barring, that you haven’t gotten much time with it (even if you haven’t had ANY, word it this way) and you’d like to understand everything involved with the job. See how they react.

As someone who understands how annoying it is to be limited in duities-

I suggest asking the shifts you can have some bar time if they dont initiate on their own.

Like make a deal to train (if you havent already ) and see if theyll allow you to make drinks when its slow.

As long as their not blocking you from bar . If they are talk to your District Manager in charge of your territory. :)
