Customer made insulting comments about my disabilty (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Greenaprongal
I have a seizure disorder that is controlled and doesn't affect my job. I've never had a fit on the job. My employer and coworkers are aware about my condition and it has never been an issue. My coworker was talking to a regular customer the other day and somehow she ended up telling him about it. He then asked me about. I was mad at my coworker for discussing it with him because it's really not anybody's business except for who I decide to inform. Then.. she got mad at him for bringing it up. Today he comes in today and apologizes for offending me. but it doesn't end here. He tells me he has always thought there was "something wrong with me" because I often look fatigued but then full of energy. I have a quiet personality, so that means I have some medical explanation???! Wtf. He said I'm slow sometimes (at my job) but understands now because he knows I'm epileptic. I know I'm not slow at making drinks. And my condition does not affect my work ethic whatsoever. I told him this but I'm still so angry and insulted by him. He comes is every single day, multiple times a day and stays for hours. Im now dreading work because I will have to interact with this jerk on a regular basis. I had a small meltdown of crying a little bit. Not sure if I should just avoid him or do something like refuse to serve him. My manager stuck up for me and got into a bit of an argument with him about this and some other things he says that are out of line.

I have no problem moving on from a rude customer. But when somebody brings something personal about me into it, that's not as easy.

First off, your coworker was completely out of line divulging your personal business to a customer, even if he is a regular. That should have been dealt with swiftly by your manager.

Having said that, I'm glad that your manager has your back, at least from what you've told us.

Walk in there each day with your head held high and don't give that douche the satisfaction of getting any type of emotional response from you. You have nothing to prove to this guy, and based on the fact that he's a tool who comes into sbux multiple times a day and insults the baristas, he probably has no friends and not much of a life.
If he DOES try to antagonize you again, I wouldn't even respond to him, just go straight to the manager and ask for him to be addressed or kicked out.
If your manager has a problem with that, I'd go higher. There's no excuse for that type of hostility in your workplace.

Don't let some insignificant fly bother you, you're clearly better than him. :)

Y'know, this sub isn't very active, but *I* saw your post, and I wanted to let you know I was thinking about you today.

I was given a bad review on yelp a few years ago. The customer went on-and-on-and-on about how I looked '65 or older' (I'm not, but whatever). I looked up the rest of her yelp posts, and she never has anything nice to say about anything...EVER.

There are cruel & mean people in this world, and it sucks.

I'm glad your SM stepped up for you.

I hope you have a better day tomorrow, Partner!
