question about relative who started about three months ago (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tuckfrumppuckfence
This is in Maryland. My relative is older--in her 50s--in a shop full of all younger people, which I'm assuming is generally the case. She is supposed to be being trained as a barista but they haven't given her any time at the bar--cleaning, register, etc., yes, but not barista training. I'm worried that they don't plan to train him on drinks. So it seems like there is actually official barista training she should be getting, right? Can you give her any advice about how to move forward with becoming a full-fledged barista? Any advice is appreciated!

I’m currently a partner as well- tell your relative to tell one of the shifts/barista trainers that she would love some more time on bar during the non-busy hours! (Maybe during a closing shift or an early morning- it’s tough to try to train someone on bar during a rush.) If telling a shift or trainer doesn’t work, they could speak to them SM about it as well. It’s always super helpful to have everyone know how to make drinks, so it shouldn’t be a problem, it’s most likely that your relative has maybe only worked during the rushes/busy time for the store where it’s hard to train the newbies. :)

I agree with every thing you said.

I was frustrated when I first started out because I felt like I was just a janitor/fetch girl—but this also allows you to know how often things are going out—like, ice, syrup, cups, lids, milk. I feel like once you get the hang of the feel of the store and how it flows you will be better prepared to bar.

Also, POS/OS help you learn the drinks and the abbreviations for beverages and food.

True that. At times, I feel I’m the only one who knows all the abbreviations and the in/out of pastry cases, amount of food purchased and what sell/don’t sell. Heck, even nobody knows about the retail/impulse offerings we have but moi.
