Just hired, need help (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by le-soleil-brille
Hello fellow baristas,
So, I recently got hired and have been working Starbucks for 3 weeks now, and I seem to be having numerous problems.
The first problem I seem to be facing is that I can't seem to be able to get the till fully, even after 3 weeks, and I'm starting to feel the pressure from my store manager (he's literally passive-aggresivly telling me to "get better"). I'm in school at the same time, and I don't have time to memorize other things.
Secondly, I hear that my store manager is gossiping about me telling another store manager that I'm "too slow on the till, and that I need to get good".
Thirdly, my store manager is comparing me to another co-worker of mine that recently got hired saying that "He got it already in 3 days", but this co-worker of mine already had some Starbucks experience meanwhile I had none.
Lastly, he is basically scheduling me full time when I tell him multiple times that I can't work for that long many hours, and that I have exams soon I need time to study. When I go to him and ask for time off for my exam, he makes me feel so bad about it like its my fault that I have exams.
What should I do? Should I just quit, because this is unneeded stress that I can't be dealing with when finals are so close by. I feel bad tho for working 3 weeks, and just leaving. Please help me!
Sincerely,
Your newbie/stressed out barista

First off, your boss can kiss my booty, he has no right to treat you that way.

Second, you need to formally submit your availability that gives you time to breathe. Try to keep it as open as possible but maybe set it up so that you have one guaranteed day off per week.

Third- I am six months in and I have only recently gotten given bar time. I mean my last two shifts. Tills are mazes. When you get a chance take a photo of each screen you can, and have a friend make fake orders and pretend to punch it in. It will take time and if you have given your manager a chance to be understanding, then its time to talk to your DM or transfer. Not all stores are like this. Do not beat yourself up. Everyone learns differently. That's great that the other guy got it quick, but you deserve an equal chance too.

You are amazing and I am so proud of you for keeping going through the BS. There is hope. Let us know if we can help more.

Definitely submit an availability form (if you haven't already), that fits better with your schedule, this should have been done right when you got hired.

Managers tend to push schedules to the limit, and I've had a couple managers take advantage of baristas who don't speak up for themselves.

As for the POS, everyone learns at different speeds. If this is your first time working with something like that, I can see why it might take you a little longer. As long as you're able to get a little better each day, I'd say you're doing just fine.

Give it a couple more weeks and if you're still feeling behind, maybe think about quitting. Starbucks isn't for everyone, and it's not worth messing up your education.

Don’t let the tills discourage you! I’ve been there for a couple years now and still have to search through the sections often. Most people don’t mind, so don’t feel pressured. Register was actually the hardest part to learn for me.
