Is First Come First Served (FCFS) efficient? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted 5.287408629115227y ago by ldebo
Hello! @baristas: I'm curious: do you always serve customers in the order they arrive \(in the store\) FCFS? That doesn't seem to be efficient. If someone orders a drink that takes a LONG time to prepare and the three customers behind that customer order drinks that can be prepared QUICKLY, don't you want to put the long drink aside, serve the three customers quickly first and then prepare the long drink? Otherwise, the customer with the drink that takes a LONG time holds up THREE other customers until the drink is finished. But if you put the long drink aside, customers are not served in the order they arrive \(FCFS\) and they might get upset... How do you deal with that? Thanks!

It is always first come, first serve, with the exception of brewed coffee which often times will be retrieved imeadiately by the partner ringing the transaction or their support partner(this can vary by location and number of partners working)

We called it staging - like if I had somebody order a frap and then an expresso, I'll do everything to get the frap ready to blend, blend it, pull the shot and put out the expresso so it doesn't expire, then finish the frap once it's done blending. On busy days you get out the drinks as fast as you can and just hope you don't get a million Frappuccinos!

Honestly you're supposed to be able to make multiple drinks at a time anyways, so even if someon'e drink takes a long time (frappuccino, lots of shots, etc) you can work on multiple drinks while one is blending/pouring/steaming/whatever. It's still going to be in order though.
