I’m hoping some of y’all can help me out with this: I went to my local Starbucks yesterday to get my usual Keto friendly pink drink and was denied by the “store manager”. According to her, she couldn’t make my drink because, and Im serious, she said “it is a health hazard. it would curdle basically be like me serving you rotten milk.” 🤨 I will describe my drink below, but can anyone tell me, was she for real? Or perhaps just didn’t feel like making the drink that day?? I’ve legit ordered this like 100x from this place and never gotten sick. 😒
GR iced passion tea No water/ no classic Add heavy cream 3 pumps SF Vanilla
Thanks guys!

There was actually a memo sent out a while back (like, nearly a year ago) saying that we couldn’t put dairy in the passion tea because something about the acidity of the tea caused the milk to curdle. I’m pretty sure it was meant primarily for hot teas (like no hot passion tea lattes, back when we still had passion tea bags) but the rule was also adopted by many for the iced ones too because of the solids that form in the heavy cream. I’m not sure if the rule still applies but with the new keto craze I’ve noticed a lot of people ordering. If I had to guess, I’d say order at your own risk, and if they still won’t make it then order a side of heavy cream and add it yourself.

I’m a keto barista, and that drink is totally fine to make! According to the Beverage Resource Manual, certain tea shakers shouldn’t be contaminated with dairy or nondairy milks so I float the heavy whip or breve on top.
In terms of food health and safety, the milk for the drink is perfectly safe to drink! The separation is natural, and while it does look funny, it’s just the structure of the hwc or breve (1/2 and 1/2) when presented with a different density liquid.

Telling customer no is a lot harder than just giving them what they ordered. Maybe she had her reasons.

Well they do almost always separate whether there’s water or not. Same with actual pink drinks (SAR and coconut milk) but I always make sure to shake them up real well when making them for customers. It’s just cause milk and tea are different, like, thicknesses? I guess is the best way to describe it? So they’re bound to separate and look funky but there’s no reason to not serve them to a customer. I heard they’re pretty good!

I make that drink at least 5 times a day and the people regularly come back and get it the next day. It’s so pretty. Every time I make it i think of cherry creamsicles.

Right?! I get it almost daily too and have NEVER had an issue. And different baristas have made it as well. I know it curdles when you add the water, which is why I ask for no water, but when I tried to explain that to her she was firm she couldn’t make it for me and other baristas shouldn’t have either. 🙄

I’ve made that dink a ton for a regular and have NEVER had it curdle on me. Unless she leaves to early for me to see it. The only thing I don’t do it shake it I just stir it around a bunch. She drinks one almost every day and is still standing so.

Has anyone of your managers said anything about it? It just seemed to me like as soon as I finished my order she didn’t want to be bothered with making it and just took a easy way out. 😑

Hate to say it but it feels that way to me. Coconut milk even separates in strawberry açaí you can see when you add only a small amount to it. No one has ever told us we cannot make it.
