Help! Training older green bean (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dont_blame_yoko
I am in the process of training a sweet older gentleman who is having a lot of trouble with routine, POS, sequencing, and pretty much all the basics. Our store is in a rough spot and he really is trying his best he is just struggling and SM is treating him terribly and it makes me so sad. Any advice I can give him or visuals I can make for him to help him during the day. I started making him a front chart on all the things he can do besides standing around waiting for a customer. He wants to help so bad but he's having so much trouble doing things on his own. He's had zero experience in register and food and has very little in customer service experience. What can I do to help his development?

Repetitions are key. We had a guy who just didn't get it at Starbucks. And we groveled through a year of him trying his best. Finally after doing it so much it just clicked for him like muscle memory. I know Starbucks training model sucks because they expect everyone to do everything after a week. Just have him do one thing until he masters it. It's sucks and wastes labor but if it works just gotta deal with it.

He hasn't touched bar yet. He's worked there over a month and still has trouble finding vanilla latte on the POS. Any time I can I let him just practice on POS and make up drinks for him to pretend to ring up but it's a struggle

I would come up with a little visual chart to stick on a corner of the POS of the POS routine maybe?

And actually I’m not sure if you have this, but at my store there’s a cheat sheet for bar for green beans of the syrup pumps and shots for each size of common drink (lattes, americanos, etc).
We stick it up by the bar so they can see, maybe that would help?
