Keeping procedures (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by popeBoi82
Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me the official procedures of introducing new recipes to barista's.

Right now, shift supervisors send emails to our private email address and they expect barista's to read it and to ask time for reading it while at work.

AFAIK the official procedure is:

SSV will ask every barista on shift if they have memorised the recipes.

If the answer is no, the ssv is supposed to train the barista until the barista is confident knowing the recipe.

As soon as the barista emits to know the recipe, he/she should be ticked on a tick box list.

Right now, barista's are getting the blame for not having read the emails and for not informing the ssv, which AFAIK is wrong since training goes down the ladder and not up.

Can anyone confirm this?

Can anyone tell me in which folder I can read into this procedure?

Appreciated mucho!

They can not ask you to do work at home unless they expect to pay you. That isn't even just Starbucks policy, it is federal law.

As for the training, each week, someone at your store (SS or SM) should print out the weekly update and give each barista 5 to 10 mins to read through it.

On some weeks there will be new recipes, as you mention. The rules are the same, you should be given 5 to 10 minutes to learn the recipe and make (and try if you want) the new beverage. This should ideally be at the beginning of your shift. If they ask you to do it before your shift starts, make sure you clock in and are being paid to train.

Again, THEY CAN NOT ASK YOU TO LEARN/TRAIN OUTSIDE OF PAID WORK TIME.

If you ever have any questions, call partner contact center.

btw.. When it comes down to schedules, is there supposed to be any overlap? Cus in our store there has never been any overlap.. You will always replace someone who already left or is leaving as soon as you start, unless the shift you are on needs more people than the previous shift, there is no such thing as an overlap. I think an overlap is necessary to tidy up and restock the station which you are about to be employed to. Am I making any sense at all or am I asking too for much?

Hey wow I really appreciate your reply!

I'm working in a licenced store in Europe so stuff might be slightly different here (law).
But you have just confirmed what I interpreted to be true.

The issue is that my SM and the majority of SSV's expect barista's to at least take notice of emailed training instructions. My inbox looks like a bomb blast, which is my choice, I don't feel like tidying it up and I'm pretty good finding my way around, as long as emails are expected.

It now happened at least twice that shift leaders didn't check barista's for knowing new drinks and blamed these barista's for not being up to date/not reading emails/unofficial WhatsApp messages about prepping new drinks.

I've just come back from a three hour.. Yes THREE hour talk between me (barista 2012) my SM and a cocky SSV, trying to explain them that they are responsible for updating barista's, while being clocked in and not by email or texting.

Sorry for the long rant here.

I'm the only full-time long term barista in my store, the other barista's are affected by this all but are mostly students working part time and thus aren't bothered to confront anyone.

It’s your SM and shifts responsibility to have you read the “Now brewing” to know the upcoming promotions and know and understand how to make the new beverages

Thanks for replying! Literally everyone except my SM and the biggest lot of ssv in my store understand this and sm/ssv are making all sorts of twists and turns to keep the responsibility on the barista's side..
