Free Samples? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Lickygirl98
Hello, I just have a question/rant about sampling. I was on bar this morning, and in the midst of the rush, a customer came to front and apparently asked for a sample of the juniper latte. The barista on front told me this, but didnt specify who it was for, and I had a lot of drinks to make. So eventually the barista on front made it to help me out, and just did 1 pump of juniper and about 2/3 steamed milk in a short cup. After the barista handed it to me and I found the customer who wanted to try it, they were furious with me, because it didn't have espresso and therefore was "not the actual drink at all". I calmly explained to her that a short latte is about $4 and we don't normally make samples in this size with espresso. She got even more angry, so I queued a shot and was about to put it into her short drink when she told me i was a bad employee and that Starbucks encourages free samples no matter what. Then she said she's in a rush and will definitely be talking to my manager and left. (why would you sample something during peak if you're in a rush?)

Sooo... Do you guys give free samples with espresso in a short cup? We didn't have the sample cups available as quickly (they were in the back) but I still wouldn't have put espresso in it. Espresso is like $2 alone. I've been here about a year and a half and haven't read anything about sampling policy, and honestly if she was nicer about it/we weren't busy I would have gladly done it, but her tone was so condescending, and I honestly don't care enough to let customers walk all over me, this minimum wage job is a means to an end.

I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to sample by making a drink and pouring it into sample cups as people pick up their regular drink. If she wanted to sample the juniper, she should’ve bought one and if she didn’t like it we replace it with something she does like. I’ve never heard of people making individual latte samples for one customer before.

I find people want to try the new syrups a lot, so our store (and the previous store I was at) will usually just steam a bit of milk with a pump of it. But to demand an individual latte sample and then to call me a bad employee is just.... So self-entitled.

It totally is. Like it’s super nice that you guys do that for customers, especially during rush. She had no business being rude.

I have never heard of giving out free samples as REQUESTED. Obvi in downtime and at the turn of the seasons we're supposed to promote new drinks or underpromoted drinks by making a venti and splitting into sample cups, and I have given samples of the different cold brews when people are interested in the nitro. But that's basically us giving a GIFT, not a customer demanding free product.
In this situation, if I were the barista at the register, I would suggest that the customer try it, and if she doesn't like it I can absolutely give a full refund or get her a different drink.

? i always make a venti (with espresso..) and put out ~7 sample cups. i’ve never heard that we aren’t supposed to put espresso in samples

Yeah, but she was the only one who wanted to try it, and with drive and front drinks, I didn't have the time to fetch he same cups and make it. I really think it was the time she chose to come and try it, we'd sample it to the cafe easily if it was even an hour later.

Customer support should have got the cups for you and helped you out.

We do make the drinks to standard and divide them up when we are sampling to the cafe, but espresso and milk and topping is so excessive if someone just wants to try it.
