Three Part Hopper (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by amarye
My store is getting a mini-remodel next week and apparently our cafe hopper is going to hold all three espressos. I'm just curious if anyone has seen anything like this yet? I'm so curious!

You’re probably getting the mastrenas II

Ooooh, the Google image looks interesting. Do you have any experience with it?

I love our Mastrena II!! You can pull three shots at once. I’ve been told the machine is better at calibrating (there’s no shot time numbers, just a star if the shot was good). Feel free to ask any questions, we’ve had them in our area for about 9 months

If the shot isn't good, does the Mastrena II tell you what to do?

The machine supposedly is smart enough to adjust the grind without any adjustment from the user. We have no way to make it coarser or finer (no knobs), just pull more shots until they’re acceptable. That part is my only drawback, you can’t see the shot history.

Oh, wow!

About how many shots (after a bad shot/s) do you have to pull before the machine corrects itself?

If you can't see the shot history, can you also not see what shot was pulled last (regular, decaf, or blonde)?

Do you still put Cafiza tablets in it to clean it?

Are all 3 hoppers separate? Like, could you take out 1 hopper to clean it & would the machine still work?

Are there still manual & automatic steaming features?

Can you pull a single long or ristretto shot, rather than having to pull in doubles?

Anything else you *don't* like about it, vs. the old Mastrena?

I started with Sbux when we made the transition from the Verismos w/ the 2 different hoppers & the double steaming wand, and there are always pros & cons...

Let me know if you have any more questions or I was unclear on anything!!

Honestly, we just do ten double shots on each machine at open and most are good to go for calibration...many times there’s only one bad shot among many good ones, I’d say it usually corrects itself easily.

The most recent shot that was pulled will stay on the screen but only for about 10-20 seconds afterwards (it’ll just say 3 blonde esp, for instance) and it’ll show a queue of the shots to be pulled underneath on the screen.

There are tablets for the machine, but they are thinner and much wider in diameter than the Cafiza tabs.

It has kids temp and extra hot buttons, if you pull all the way down on the lever it will steam to auto temp...to manually steam you need to push the lever forward and hold it (also to purge the wand).

You CAN pull single ristretto, but my mind is blanking on long shots (pretty sure you can). There’s also a button for upside shots, which is more caffeinated. I know you can only do multiples of two for that though.

The machine will NOT operate if all three hoppers aren’t inside, but if the machine is turned off/not in use, you can take them out one at a time.

In my opinion, the biggest downfall is not being able to see the shot times/all the additional info that’s on the mastrena I. I just don’t like to blindly trust the machines. If you have partners that are rough with hoppers, there are little plastic pieces that easily come off near the bottom (we’ve had to get ours replaced 2-3x already). Unfortunately, when it’s down, it’s down. There’s a lot of options that only the technician can check/are locked on the machine (ours was set up to Celsius and we had to get the tech to change it). I love having all three beans on one machine, being able to pull 3 shots at once, etc. it’s definitely good for newer partners, less margin of error.

Our store had a remodel last year and instead of getting the Mastrenas II we just got a third bar. So now we have one bar strictly for Drive and two for Cafe.
