Scheduled when in class (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Merrow_Winds
Hi guys.
I am shift supervisor.
I'm currently taking classes and I was scheduled for a shift when my class is (this thursday)
It's been my availability for the last 12 weeks and it is in the system. And has not been a problem. Our brand new manager scheduled me and I told her as soon as it went up.(nov 4th) I wouldn't be able to work it.
She said she would see what she could do.

Today she texted me asking if I was not planning to work that shift since I had circled it on the paper schedule. I responded that I wasnt planning on skipping class and reminded her that I told her I would be unable to work it and we had already discussed it plus it was already outside of my availability.
Now I am being guilted into working it and skipping my graduate class.

Any recommendations of how to move forward without getting a write up?
Thank you.

Get someone to cover, and I'm sure you can find some sympathy because if she was willing to screw you over then I'm sure you're not the only one, explain the situation gently

I've already looked for coverage and tried switching shifts. We have a shift on medical leave and another one just finished thier last day a week ago.
I knew at some point I would have been accidentally scheduled outside of my availability but I feel like being told to skip class and work isn't the correct response on her end.

“Accidentally” is no accident. I was shift and same thing happened to me. Other shifts quit or had leave and I was scheduled outside my availability because my SM was scrambling trying to make it work. Stick to your guns and tell your SM no. Graduate school is more important. And your manager will either cover your shift themselves or call other stores for help.

You're right it's not, ask her who the main borrowed partners are and get their contact info

It is t your fault either so if you do get written up mention that you were scheduled out of your availability.

It’s not your fault because it’s been your availability for so long and it’s in the system. You’ve already discussed it with your SM, so it’s their JOB to keep everyone’s availability in mind. If they write you up on it and is upset about it, bring it up with your DM. You have further proof it’s in the system.

I thought shifts had to have open availability

No. I can have times that I'm not available to work.
Starbucks doesn't pay me enough for me to have 100% open availability for them.

I see, our store requires open availability for shifts. In this situation school is clearly more important, but I dont know how to avoid getting written up if your SM is being unreasonable.
