Transfer or quit and reapply? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by theINFOsponge
I am moving to a different part of LA that would make it difficult to commute to my current store. Before finding a store to take me in near my new apartment, I asked my manager if they are willing to transfer me. They said they can’t do it during the holidays and I would need to wait till Mid-January. When I talked about it with them, they had mentioned that the new store will ask if I have any “opportunities” and they would have to be honest with them and say that I am monotone at times and need to be more “bubbly” with customers, although I am a great partner when it comes to operations and standards. They are a new manager and recently transferred to my store/district and nobody really likes them at our store and I think they may be taking my monotone personality personally , in addition to my request to transfer.

Anyways, should I tough it out (my commute would me close to an hour, which is not worth it for just a 4 hour shift at times ) or quit and reapply to a new store near my area ( has anyone ever done this)?

Also, in February, I would hit my two year bean stock time.

Thanks !

Do you have a relationship with your DM or a previous store manager you could talk to? If you just quit, they can put you as not rehireable. I’m pretty sure that people would abuse stuff like this. Realistically, if you want to transfer, an hour commute is a big part of it. Your SM probably just doesn’t want to lose someone during the holidays, which is understandable, but it happens. A partner is leaving us next week and transferring to another state.

The main thing will be finding a store near you that can take you. Go to local Starbucks near where you will be living, find a good one/close one, and try to meet the store managers. Explain your situation, talk about your experience and highlight your abilities (“I’m an amazing CS during peak” or “you can leave me alone on bar if it’s crazy and I can handle it”).

Having a specific destination store and a new SM there who is interested, plus the approval of your DM, are what you need to make this happen, NOT the will of your current SM.

Thanks for all your info!! I guess I have to build a relationship with the manager at the store I want to get to. My current DM is a new hire DM so I’ve only met her a few times. She probably doesn’t even know my name to be honest

Gotchas. Yeah, you need an ally! What about your old SM?

I am keeping a great relationship with her. Her new store is just a bit out of the way for me still :/

Well that’s a great person to use as a reference! If you find that new store, you could say “I currently work for one person but this other person was my SM for the first year and a half!”

^^^^ all of this. Also, specify which manager(s) can give you good recommendations, and don’t mention the troublesome one.

If you're able to, why don't you take a "vacation"? You can take 3 weeks and do something else while you get transferred.

How does this work ?

Are you talking about a leave of absence?

I can’t request days off and expect to get them cause December is blacked out :(

Oh yeah that's true, it might be an option if you were moving immediately but I forgot about that. I just knew that you could take up to three weeks of vacation at a time
