Transferring & need advice! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nicolef15
I have currently been a barista since May 8th. I currently live in Ohio and am looking to move in together with my boyfriend this January. He lives in Madison, Wisconsin so I’m looking to transfer near the downtown area. The store I’m currently at my manager has made a policy of no requests off and we’re also not allowed to switch our schedules to accommodate a random scheduled shift. Only in the matter of something serious we can request off but it has to be 30 days in advance for baristas and 60 for sm’s. I’m worried about moving to another store where I have to deal with this kind of strictness.

Thanks!

That's ridiculous, usually it is stricter around the holidays, but that's pretty absurd. Definitely call some stores in Madison, and ask to set up a time to talk to the SM to determine fit. Obvi you can go onto the Starbucks careers page to see what stores have openings, but usually most stores will be open to hiring a transfer even if they haven't posted a position because it's no skin off their back, they don't need to train you.

Also, the DM signs off on transfers, not the SM, so even if your SM gives you shit about transferring (which sounds like their modus operandi given their strict time off policy), it doesn't really matter, just reach out to your DM. The SM at your new store will usually talk to your SM basically just to ask "do you approve the transfer (aka is the partner leaving on good terms), and "Is that partner a good worker?" but that's about it. I was surprised at how chill some SMs were about the transfer process. One SM that I called to talk about transferring was just like "oh, you want to transfer? Great, I'll fill out the paperwork," without really asking me anything.

That’s what I was reading in the handbook with the DMs. I’m actually telling him tomorrow so I’m nervous to see if he’s going to give me shit.

This is unfathomably strict. I only see stores adopt this kind of policy for holiday with a lock out of requests off, but never for shift trades.
