It’d be dope if Starbucks offered classes to its partners to learn sign language (self.starbucksbaristas)

Since Starbucks is on their whole deaf culture kick I think it’d be nice and necessary to encourage all baristas to learn ASL. That’d be incredible for its brand and its employees would be encouraged to learn a marketable skill. Let me know what the rest of you think, if you had access to these classes would you take them?

I have a deaf partner - the funny thing is, I hired her 2 weeks before the signing store opened, and my dm told me it was a terrible idea. After the store opened she admitted she was wrong. My partner is amazing and teaches us all sbux or work related signs and it's so easy! If sbux did just a beginners course for the basics I think it would be fantastic.

Right?!?!? That’s awesome, do your partners pick it up relatively easily? Like have any of them (besides your deaf partner) been able to sign an entire order?

Myself and one other can now, yeah! It's really not as complicated as I thought it would be!

Something that would be less expensive would be adding an option to see the signs for a drink on the app. Like you click on the item description and under the nutrition facts it says how to sign it or something?

That’s a pretty good idea

Not a lot of drinks have their own signs, though. Coffee and espresso do, but most others are colloquial at best.

Also good.

Lots of free online resources if you actually want to learn!

I was going to say. If one felt so compelled, they could absolutely find resources online. Why rely on your employer to provide them? That said, this does seem like a very Starbucksy thing to do.

They used to offer what was essentially a crash course on the hub, but I don't know if it's there anymore.

Otherwise, try $1, a website made by Deaf ASL teacher Bill Vicars - this is what I use for basic sign and it is SOO helpful!

There's also $1 which I found helpful, too.

Dude I'm a green bean and the look on my store managers face when I told him I could spell in ASL was beautiful! He was not expecting it at all and he got super excited. (I live in a sorta smalltown)

I thought this would be a cool idea also. Kind of like they did with the green class that was just offered (a month or so ago?).

My store has a partner whose mom is deaf so he offers to teach us whenever we’d like to learn. I know the alphabet which isn’t as easy but has helped in some situations.

Its not necessary for Starbucks to pay for classes when you have all the resources you need online. Ive taught myself sign language for years and never paid for a single class.
