I'm an outside-hire shift supervisor(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Candelantern
god help me.
I just started about two weeks ago, and although I have some management experience in retail, I've never worked in anything so fast-paced and mutlitask-oriented before. Everyone has more experience than me, and it doesn't help that I'm literally learning to do two jobs at the same time.
I feel like an idiot. I suppose this is just kind of a vent post, because I signed up to be stressed out until I get the hang of everything I need to learn how to do. I want to be a good supervisor - I want to make things easier for the baristas, and make the floor run smoothly, and build good relationships with my coworkers.

Any other baristas or supervisors out there have advice and/or encouragement for someone super new to starbucks, jumping straight into shift?

You can do it. Just ask questions, have a thick skin, make sure to communicate communicate communicate! It does get easier, I’ve seen shifts, assistant managers, and managers be hired in and they do fine. But yeah it’s hard work, study whatever you can at home.

the two replies on this post are polar opposites lol. Thanks for the encouragement, man. My team definitely supports me and I'm nothing if not communicative. I think I can do it. Hopefully it'll get easier as the weeks go by.

Good luck. Never seen an outside hire shift make it past the 3 month mark. Hopefully that's just my personal experience.
Just be open with your team about your experience level and ask for their help and input. If you can get the team behind you, and they support you, you should be successful.

well, it's been three months officially since I started, and I'm still here!

I actually tried to put in my two weeks yesterday. My work environment is intense. There's nothing but constant office politics and gossip. I've been talked about behind my back, blamed for mistakes I didn't make, and treated like an idiot by my coworkers.

I'm meeting with my SM tomorrow to see if we can work things out. The one thing I can say is that I haven't failed!! I'm good at my job considering how long I've been doing it, and I've been told as much by the people I work most closely with. It's just a matter of how much I'm willing to put up with the bullshit, you know?

Congrats! Hope your meeting with your SM goes well

I’m in the same boat, green bean, new shift and I sooo agree some days I go home and wonder what the heck was I thinking lol.. some days are wonderful and some days oy vey.. doesn’t help I have an employee on my crew that dislikes new people and I can’t seem to break his shell ...

Listen to your crew but also use the ever living crap out of all your resource materials is my best advice. I was thrown into Shift lead after 2 months and it’s hard! Just remember you can do it
