POS Help???? I'm new and panicking(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by EliNotEllie
Almost lost my job on day 4 (I only got four days of training instead of 2 weeks) due to repeated panic over running the POS. I don't know where anything is on the register. I tried taking pictures of the different screens to study when I got home but missed several. Does anyone know if there's a reference online somewhere of the register screens I can study?
Edit: Thank you so much for your reassurance! I went back to work today (the store manager agreed to give me three more days of training) and was much calmer about it. Fingers crossed I can keep this up!

It's so horrible when you start doing POS with a lack of training. My biggest recommendation is DO NOT let work seep into your own time, as it's not your problem if you weren't properly prepared for the tills, and I really don't think it's as effective as you think. I hope no one actually said that you could potentially lose your job—if they do, say please understand that nobody can pick this shit easy.
Be patient, pester the hell outta your colleagues to get things right (hopefully they're understanding, mine were at least which I'm fortunate for) and don't be an ounce sorry about it. If it's hella busy, you gotta grin your teeth until a partner is available to help, but it's better to make sure things are fine then making a mistake and causing problems a bit later. If a customer gets annoyed, be honest that you weren't adequately prepared for this role and they will just have to bear with you, usually people are annoyed but ultimately understanding.
Things will get better, stay strong and you'll be valued for killing it on POS in the foreseeable future :)

Hello, I'm a green bean too and I've been a cashier at a few places, but this is the first POS system I've ever dealt with. I will admit it can be overwhelming. I work at several stores in the area and they all have something different on the menu, so that causes me to panic still sometimes too. Repitition is key, Stay calm and keep looking. Sometimes I just use the "Ask Me" option and partners are like, "why didn't you use the button?" And then flip through the screens and talk at the same time and I'm still struggling to keep up. Keep a smile, you're doing your best with the tools you've been given. :)

Dude we have all been there for sure. Learning POS is all about becoming familiar with the register and, like most things at Starbucks, just doing it again and again until you develop muscle memory. Any chance you get, mess around on the register, go through all the screens, press all of the buttons. Ask other partners to come up with complicated fake drinks to help you get a feel for it.
It just takes time! Believe in yourself!

I definitely had a bit of a hard time figuring out the register!
Just breathe. Think about the drinks and if you know how they’re made. Lattes are made with espresso so that will be the tab, blended are going to be all of your Frappuccinos. You got this! Just as long as your trainer knows you need help with the register they should train you more!

I recently got hired and had hard time with pos even though I worked as cashier in many places my advice is if you have to take sometime to find a drink let the customer know that you are new hire it does wonder and you would be surprised at how nice they will be also get familiar with the regular drinks in each menu for example your brewed teas has it own sub menu then your tea latte and just remember to breath also I find that talking to customers as you placing the order will give you enough time to find the button (I usually ask how is your day going / how I'd the weather) and finally I don't think you would lose a job just cause you did not have enough training if you struggling at post then I would say pick up bar and then slowly work on learning POS when it slow also make sure that you get paid for training if you coming off schedule to train your time deserve to be paid PERIOD

I promise you that you just need to learn the basics. The screens seem to change each season. New drinks are added and others are moved around. I usually just laugh about it and say, “I’m so sorry, they keep moving these buttons on me” And people usually laugh. It happens and even my senior partners have some trouble sometimes. Do not stress. You will learn them.

It's called POS for a reason, lol.
I'm new too, and what I did was just just make up lots of fake drinks in my down time. That got me used to where most locations were, granted I still go to the wrong place *every time* someone orders a hot chocolate or caramel drizzle.
But yeah, let your Shifts know you need help on till, and when it takes you more than two seconds to find the right button, just apologize to the customer and tell them you're new. I routinely tell people, both in person and over drive thru that "i've just gotta find that button". I've received like 85% positive responses from customers when I mention my newness. Another partner told me that she still tells customers that she's new when they seem impatient (partner for 3 years).
But yeah, keying up false custom drinks in your down time helps a ton! I'm currently working on familiarizing myself with RTD&E button locations for when I'm in drive through.

Everyone has a different learning style, but it helped me to focus on process of elimination. Just think about what you already do know. If they're ordering a tall extra-hot vanilla latte, and you know where the tall button is, hit that first. Do what you know first and then search for what you don't know.
