Clean play is like a regular shift where you focus on cleaning. There are no customers in the store with you during this time. You will not get extra pay besides your regular pay. I work that shift every week and I find it really relaxing. It’s nice to work and get things done without customers interrupting.

To answer that second question:
You can certainly ask but it's not your employers responsibility to provide a way for you to get to and from work. If you feel unsafe working that shift because you walk or use public transportation you can always talk to your manager about not being scheduled for it.

They do expect you to get an absurd amount of stuff done in a little amount of time, but it is definitely nice to be able to clean things you otherwise wouldn’t be able to/have time to during the day. I’ve been doing it every day since we started it in September.

If you look in the daily records book, there is a tab for the clean play and it will have it all outlined for you there.

Clean plays include things that are 'disrupive to the customer experience'.

Things we have done are:

Pull out (it's on wheels) the condiment bar, & deep clean the whole thing & the wall behind it.

Disassemble, clean, & recalibrate the coffee grinder.

Dust the ceiling vents behind the line.

Dust the light fixtures in the lobby. We can't do the ceiling vents in the lobby, because they're over the height limit (IIRC, it's 12 feet). We used to call that task in for facilities to do, but I haven't een a person come in over a year & the last time I called it in, the work order got cancelled.

Clean the entire milk fridge. Takes me about an hour to do. I used to do it on a 'slow' afternoon years ago, but with labor cuts, it's on my next clean play cadence.

Pull apart the RTD&E case & clean it. See milk fridge above.

I’d consider it safe even because all of the money is locked away and you keep the doors locked. Pay and benefits are the same as any other shift.
