Man being nasty to female barista (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by texjanysek
A usual comes in and as I am getting his drink, he asks me “Was Santa good to you this year? Were you a naughty girl or a nice girl?”
It took me off guard. I almost spilt his pike. I paused and swallowed the rant I was about to say to him. Instead I just smiled sarcastically.
I just handed him his drink and said “I actually got a lot of sentimental cards, sir.”
He came up for a refill. Got mad I charged him the $.54 for it, and proceeded to call me darling. When I didn’t respond, he cleared his throat and said “Uhm, sorry”.
Now every time he comes in, he tries to meet my eyes to see if I’ll smile or wave like I used to. I just look at him everyday and give him a small smile and nod and avoid him.

Why is it that so many middle aged-older men think it’s okay to say stuff like that to baristas? Just because we have an apron on and we are behind the counter doesn’t mean we don’t deserve to be treated as humans and not pieces of meat. I’ve had so many creepy comments or lines from older men and I am just not cool with it.

I worked as a waitress and bartender before coming to the Bux, and the amount of sexist pigs who treat us like garbage here is beyond baffling. I truly don't get it. But after 6 years, I have to say the approach you give is the best for shutting it down. I've worked alongside dozens of baristas who engage and almost encourage this behavior then complain to me about it later. Ignore them! Shut em down! Don't let them think it's okay, because it isn't.

My manager straight up told us we have to just suck it up and ignore harassment because "in the end, they're the customer."

Mmmno. Being nice and trying not to piss off the customer does not mean they have the right to talk like that. It would be inappropriate even if I were in an informal setting. If a 50 year old man is coming up to me like that, I would uncomfortably smile and do the whole barista spiel as a way to get out of the situation. The man KNEW what he was doing and even said sorry, any basic human with sense would know it’s not ok.

Gross. Reminds me of this guy Bob we had at my store in Vegas. He moved a while back, thank God.
