Is my manager allowed to do this? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by jessimarie97
So I’m on opener an we clock in at 4am. She requires us to be there 10 minutes before we clock on, so 3:50am, and all walk in together and if you don’t, you are locked out until 4:20/when the safe is closed again. So even if I get there before 4, before anyone should be clocked in or the safe open, I am not allowed inside and I will be forced to clock in late and possibly be penalized. She wants us there 10 minutes early to make sure our aprons are clean, read the weekly update, and prepare for our shift and I understand but only openers get locked out for an extra 20 minutes for not being 10 minutes early.

That’s garbage. Illegal, against policy, and locking you out for being late is also really dangerous?? What if it’s like freezing cold?? If she was just asking you to get there ten minutes early that’d be one thing but not letting you clock in and also locking you out for being late is ridiculous. I would transfer I bet they’re a nightmare in other ways too. A good manager makes all the difference.

Do you clock in at 350am? Does your schedule say you start at 350am?

If not, then your manager is requiring you to work off the clock, which is a big no-no.
