Calling out the names of people before making their drink? Is this a company wide thing? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by blakefealy
Management of my starbucks is telling us that corporate’s new policy is that when we pull the stickers of cafe orders that we are suppose to tell the customer that we are starting their drink (ie “Tom, I’m starting your drink now”). This seems problematic for a multitude of reasons. My store has a history of stretching the truth when it comes to company policy. Is this a real thing that starbucks is telling stores to do?

It’s not a policy.

But that doesn’t mean your store can not enforce a rule as long as it’s reasonable.

That’s fine, but then they shouldn’t lie and say it’s not them, it’s corporate

I agree. Although it may be something your area or regional manager asked your DM and SM to enforce. In which case it’s technically from cooperate, but not a policy.

"corporate" is a pretty ambiguous term. If your SM says corporate, they could be talking about something coming out of the main offices in Seattle.....or they could be talking about their district manager, area director or anyone in between. So they might be trying this in your district/area and not in others. Does that mean it's not coming from "corporate"? Depends on your and your SM's definition.

from what I know its good to do if they’ve been waiting for a while or that kinda thing. Its supposed to make it easier to connect with the customer but I’m pretty sure it isn’t policy

Our store just started requiring this too, it’s coming from the DM and RM I believe. There’s a lot of BS going on and they keep visiting our store and saying our customer connection sucks and now there’s all these new policies being enforced. I only got hired in October, so it’s been an ordeal 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think it’s something new. I’ve heard about it in my region too.

This isn’t a policy. We do this at our store in order to get thru peak with less people asking where their drinks are, it keeps them in the loop. It does come in handy if people are having a long wait time.

I'm pretty sure this is the new thing. I had a temp DM for a month and then our new DM started recently and this had been the push from both of them for better customer connections. I don't do it most the time but i will make sure i have started a line of conversation with the customer.

My store requires we call their name when we start making a nitro-brew drink, that's probably corporate

“Touch the cup” which gets terribly tiring during peak/when you’re swamped in general
