Alright y’all so what’s your opinion on putting espresso drinks in trenta cups? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by urlocalbarista
We have this regular who orders a venti iced americano with two ristretto shots, two long shots, 4 raw sugars, extra coconut milk, light water, and shaken and then put into a trenta cup.

And every time she comes through the drive thru my new partners always allow her to put it into a trenta cup!

And I’m not sure if this is Starbucks policy, or just my store’s policy, but I told her today that we’re not allowed to do that bc we have a limited supply of cups. They’re solely for iced coffee and iced teas. She threw a huge fit, and my ASM told me “just give it to her. It’s all about making the moment right for the customer, even if they’re wrong.”

And I completely understand that! But it’s so infuriating to me! Idk if this is just my store’s policy or what, but this is so infuriating to me.

What’s your guys’ opinions on espresso beverages in trenta cups?

It is against policy.
Kittens_bean 17 points 4y ago
If a dm saw you doing that you would be in a lot of trouble.
urlocalbarista [OP] 8 points 4y ago
Thank you! It’s so frustrating. Also, my ASM allows free tea refills with half heavy cream and half tea. I know we aren’t supposed to do that either, we’re supposed to charge for the heavy cream, but she lets customers do it for free anyways.

I seriously think she needs a refresher for the Starbucks policy....

I'd get a hold of your sm because an asm can't be developing bad habits
Pootz_ 13 points 4y ago
It’s against policy, but we have to MaKe ThE mOmEnT rIgHt

Ask your store manager. Who cares? We aren't paid enough to care about the difference in price, blah blah.

Like, seriously, customer service management 101 - it's not worth the hassle for a one-off like that. She'll probably never come back.

Bonus problem: she'll also like give you the WeLl ThEy AlWaYs MaKe It LiKe ThAt IvE NeVeR HaD A PrObLeM BeFoRe LeT Me SpEaK To YoUr MaNaGeR.
urlocalbarista [OP] 5 points 4y ago
Lol she’s said that to us before! “Well you guys always do it for me I’ve never had a problem at other stores either” well lisTEN HERE biTCH IT’S BECAUSE OTHER STORES ARE DOING IT WRONG LOL
stella-lunar 6 points 4y ago
I honestly just don’t think it’s that big of a deal. My district manager would certainly err on the side of complying with a customer over preserving a policy that seems to now be more about semantics than anything else. It’s not a health or safety issue, it’s an honestly irrational rule from customer POV and it’s usually easier to just put the drink in a trenta cup, don’t waste time or energy getting grumpy about it, and move along with your day.
urlocalbarista [OP] 2 points 4y ago
Yeah that’s true, I’ll keep that in mind when she comes through again lol. It’s not gonna be worth getting pissed off over it, I’ll just give her the trenta cup and move on
chunkdadeuce 5 points 4y ago
That's gonna be a no from me dawg.
iqueefkief 5 points 4y ago
why does it make you mad?
urlocalbarista [OP] 6 points 4y ago
If she wasn’t so pissy and rude with us I don’t think I would have been as upset lol. But idk, this is just another example of customers cheating the system I guess? And I know it’s just a cup, but if we keep telling the customers they’re right and if we keep doing whatever they ask us even if it’s against policy, like the free refill on heavy cream in a tea that I mentioned in another comment, then they’ll keep trying to scam us I guess. I know it shouldn’t really matter to me bc I’m just a barista but customers are just really annoying lol
iqueefkief 2 points 4y ago
fair enough!! i used to get really bothered about it as well, but i’m going on 3 years now and i’ve learned it improves my mood and my stress levels to just go the path of least resistance, especially now that corporate is more focused than ever on customer relations.

until product loss becomes a very serious concern for your store manager, my best advice is to just let them have it, and the way that makes it easiest for me is to imagine how much profit is being made off of every 50c charged for some heavy cream or soy or almond milk, and also considering how little of that we’re actually seeing as baristas. customers aren’t scamming us tbh, we’re all kinda getting scammed by corporate ‘murica.

money is stressful. i try to think that’s the only reason customers get upset over policies that are designed to pinch pennies.

in any case, i hope whatever way you decide to deal with things ends up helping you cope easier with the bullshit we get every day.
urlocalbarista [OP] 2 points 4y ago
That’s so true!! I really should just give them what they want and not fight it. Because when I get annoyed at a customer then it ends up throwing off my mood for the entire day. Next time I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for the advice!!

it definitely sucks figuring out the right thing to do, because we’re trained one way and often told to do another when it’s actually happening. most frustrating thing in the job in customer service, i hate it.
Linszrem 4 points 4y ago
It’s not your cups it doesn’t matter. As long as she’s paying the right price for her ingredients that’s fine sounds to me the only “extra” thing she’s getting is ice. Also policy for drinks is as long as it’s rung up and charged correctly the only time we can refuse to make an order is if I violate health codes. Example is at our store we won’t steam cinnamon into milk since we have multiple people who are allergic.
alliecatb 2 points 4y ago
Starbucks: “Here’s a bunch of policies and standards you need to follow and if you don’t you’ll be fired. “
Also Starbucks: “make the moment right, how dare you enforce policies and slightly inconvenience someone.”
urlocalbarista [OP] 1 points 4y ago
I know!!! It pisses me off! Why make policies to follow when we can’t even enforce them? It’s stupid as hell
alliecatb 1 points 4y ago
Honestly it’s gotten even more infuriating since I became a shift, I’m supposed to enforce these things but you’re just gunna kiss this customers ass who just called me a stupid bitch? Like come on man.
LZARDKING 2 points 4y ago
It’s a no from me dawg

I have the same situation with one of my regulars. She gets an iced Carmel macchiato in a Trenta cup with extra ice, a trenta water with extra ice, and a trenta cup with just ice and this is every single day. And I think it’s wrong to give her all of these trenta cups just because she is a regular so it’s fine. This woman is very rude to some of the baristas and is picky about her drink if it’s not made correctly she screams and yells and later in calls my manager to complain about the barista who made it wrong. I understand making the customer happy but she definitely takes advantage of the store.
urlocalbarista [OP] 2 points 4y ago
That’s super annoying. Especially if she comes every single day. I’m sure it’s even more of a problem in summer when everyone is ordering iced teas and you have a limited supply of trenta cups :/
socktines 2 points 4y ago
I have a regular who puts venti fraps in a trenta cup with extra ice, she always comes through when we don't have enough time to talk with her about why we can't continue to do this, but all the shifts at my store want to stop. So we are stuck for now but I hope we stop
madreb 2 points 4y ago
Pick your battles it is just a cup, charge correctly for the ingredients used and allow the customer a trenta cup.
I have a customer that orders a 3 shots in a grande cup, with 3 pumps of white mocha them adds breva from the bar...and only wants to be charged for 3 shots. When she is making a WM latte with an extra shot and Breva. So I put out very little Breva and charge her for all the shots and syrup. She complained and my SM stated I was correct. 😊 I didn't argue with her, I just outsmarted the customer.
foamymilk 2 points 4y ago
I know we’re not supposed to, but the only time anyone ever does it at my store is if they want EXTRA whip cream and we’ll just put a shit ton in a Trenta and top it off
urlocalbarista [OP] 2 points 4y ago
I’ve had customers ask me that too, and one time I put extra whip in a trenta cup for them. And the ONE TIME I did that, the customer was like “um...why is there a flat lid? I want the round one.” I swear....🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
