I recently became a barista trainer. My manager at my store when I signed said downfall is I don’t get tipped when training. I was ok with that until I went to a different store trained some newbies and they called me after saying when was I coming for tips I was confused so I asked I thought I didn’t they responded with I still do get tips. So gladly I went picked them up. I was scheduled at my store to train someone and ended up not being able to train since the person was sick and had to postponed so my hours got rearranged and I was a partner on the floor. Well the week of tips I didn’t receive anything (even though I was not training I was a barista on floor and had worked extra hours most of those day) I asked my manager why I didn’t get tips honestly I was pretty upset by this and she said it was because I was scheduled as a trainer. I mentioned to her that I got tips at the other store and that two of my coworkers when training at our store everytime have gotten tips so how is it I didn’t or wouldn’t (future) when it seems others are. I’m training again this week to next and honestly I just want to know how to approach it with my manager who seems to say only I don’t get tips when others have every time.

Hey! I’m an SM in Washington. This sounds like something to talk to your DM or partner contact. Training hours used to not be tippable but since moving to the new teamworks scheduling system they are. Also the week you worked on the floor while training did you take shifts for other partners or were you additional coverage? Sounds like they used you for extra coverage but left you coded for training so they wouldn’t be over in labor reporting. This is against all ethics and compliance rules. Print out your paystubs and make a phone call to pcc.

So that week I was supposed to be train, however the one I was supposed to train was sick so instead of being a trainer I was a partner on floor just moved my hours around to be on floor. So that whole week we were slammed by pre a event and I was coming in early and coming in later. So as a partner on the floor I should’ve been tipped however she claimed it was because I was scheduled as a trainer my hours got dismissed from the tip thing.
However every co worker in my store tells me when they train they get tipped so to me it felt personal being told there’s no tip but to everyone else yes. I’m also training this week and last with the store and again being told no tips even though I confronted her nicely and timidly how others in our store are so why is it you say I dont

Sounds like a question for your DM. I am a barista trainer and when I am training I do not take tips. My choice as I am also the AM at my store, if I am on shift working as a Barista and not a trainer or manager on duty. I will take tips but only like a 1/4th because I make more than the baristas...and only if they insist.
