In need of some tall advice in a grande cup (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hey guys!
Sorry for the long post, but I was hoping I could get some advice on my store. We have had a LOT of turnover in management and we finally got a new permanent manager a few months ago and since then she has completely slashed our hours and ruined the schedule. Partners used to get 30ish hours unless they request 20 for part time. Now the max we get is about 15 with some partners getting as low as 8.

We thought it had something to do with the new store opening up down the street. We hired the whole barista staff and trained them at our store and then their store opening was delayed so she would schedule them at our store. Things were so bad one employee got 0 hours. He wasn’t put on the schedule at all. Since the store opened we thought we would get our hours back but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

My average schedule is 13 hours a week and I know there are other partners freaking out about losing their health insurance or their scholarship if they don’t get enough. When asked about our hours, the manager said to the room “I don’t play that game. You aren’t guaranteed hours. If you want more hours, pick up shifts at another store.” Which is not very manager-y or in line with what I feel like Starbucks is as a company. I got hired at this store, you should schedule me to work here. I shouldn’t have to go to other stores and beg for hours.

Our schedule also always seems to be wrong. Most of the time we are running a two (max 3) person floor with a drive thru and a cafe. My shift and I were the only ones on the floor for three hours and we were scheduled to take our lunches at the same time, which is obviously impossible. We need more people on the floor but she isn’t scheduling them and we are all fighting for hours.

One theory is that managers get a bonus at the end of the year for all the hours they saved during the year and she is cutting corners, running good baristas off to other stores, for a bonus.

My question is, what do I do about this? Our DM doesn’t seem to care at all and all of my partners are too scared to say anything because they might be fired. I’ve only been at the company for about six months so I’m not sure the best way to go about this but I have to say something. Please, does anyone have any advice?

I’m not a store manager but the first step is take is on the DCR there is something called “forecasted hours” that’s the amount of ours you SM is allowed to schedule. They shouldn’t be scheduling under or over. Check that and calculate how many hours she scheduled. If it’s under like you suspect, bring that up. It might even be worth call the partner resource line and bringing it up to them if it’s way under.

So I work in Ireland in Starbucks so I'm not sure how hours work where you are, but here if a store makes a certain amount of money then they can schedule a certain amount of hours. For example if the store makes $100 then they can schedule 10 hours per store. They higher the money coming in the more hours they can schedule. I'm guessing that there is too many staff at the store you work at and therefore the manager doesn't have enough hours to split between everyone. You could ask to transfer to a busier store where they are able to allocate more hours? Hope that all makes sense.

I’m a store manager in Washington state. With our old scheduling system(GLS) we were given a certain number of hours for the week and we could allocate them wherever they fit best. For example a Friday would receive more hours than a Monday. With the new system(teamwork’s) we get a specific number of hours that day and have to make it work. There is also a graph that we need to follow for how many people are on the floor at the same time based on information from the past 2 years on when we will see customers. It’s unfortunate that you aren’t getting hours. Honestly I’ve been in that position as a manager where I don’t have hours to give. My advice would be the same as hers but in a nicer way, pick up hours at other stores. She’s not getting a bonus for saving labor. It doesn’t work like that. We get in just as much trouble being understaffed as we do over staffed, we can’t get good customer reviews and pass safety assessments if we are understaffed so I’m not sure where you got the information on bonuses. Good luck and I hope you can pick up some hours!

Call PCC and see what they say about the situation. In the mean time, call other stores and pick up shifts. You deserve to earn your paycheck; don’t let them take it away just because you’re not working at your home store.
