Hi all. Looking forward to my new part time barista job after 9 hellish years working in retail. I've never worked in food service a day in my life, what's something you wish someone told you on day 1?

Ask all the questions, never assume. If your hours aren't what you want, bug people until they are. Have fun. Don't take anything personal, it's just coffee and that angry customer is just gonna be your juicy gossip the instant they walk out that door

And it's easier to put coffee into the filter basket if you drape/squeeze the filter upside down over the can and put the whole can into the basket, then gently pull the can out In circular motions, leaving a filter and fresh grounds in the basket.

Hydrate and Caffinate. In that order. The dehydration can sneak up on you.
Also - Undertows are the best

Agreed to one of the above posts, it's just coffee, try not to take the angry customers so seriously. I shed too many tears over angry customers that were most definitely not worth it. Ask questions, no questions are stupid. I've been with the company a year now and have new trainees coming in and one of them today was like " this might be a stupid question" it's not! Not at all. You're new, you don't know and noone expects you to. It's okay to not know. I think we would all rather you ask about things we already taught you than have you do it wrong or feel lost.
