can someone who has been a barista trainer for a bit outline their process for training a green bean? i find myself feeling really overwhelmed when i look at the training plan, and i think being able to see how someone else does it will help me figure out how i want to do it. i wish there was a literal detailed, step by step, this is the order you go in, manual like there is for everything else. like how do i decide what to do when and how do i structure it so it's not chaotic? how do i coordinate well with the ssv while doing training? i have anxiety and add, and i know these things are playing into it. any tips would be appreciated!

Everyone learns differently, so don’t over think it! Just ask them how they learn best, then go from there. I usually have them do their computer training, show them, then have them practice what they learned. Take it at your own pace and breathe. You’re amazing and I’m sure you’ll do great!

This was exactly what I did as a trainer for two years before I was promoted and 90% of my baristas are still at my store!

but how did you and @veronicatheavenger decide which order to do the modules in?

I usually started out with cs, nice out of the way then registers/dt. Bar is ALWAYS last for me cause it’s never a good time to train someone on bar lmao

I felt super overwhelmed at first! What really helped me was sitting down everyday when they were practicing and writing my own detailed plan for the next day. When we were going to do which section and what time they were going to be on the computer, all of our breaks, everything.
I never stuck to the plan exactly but it made me feel so much better having something to refer to and a general idea of what I was teaching each day.
Go into it knowing that some modules will take you longer to teach than you think and others you’ll fly though and it’s always ok to give them a task to do while you go figure out stuff out. Also always plan on breaks taking 10 mins longer than you think they will. It take green beans longer to do everything at first but it’s cool cause they’re trying their best!
Good luck!

I teach CS first as allows us to get to know each other a little, it eases the barista into their new role, and it lets them see how each position works individually and as a team. It also allows them to look around the store and start to locate things. Next day is register so they can start meeting the regulars and get an idea of drinks and drink recipes. Third day is hot bar and if it's quiet enough we practice the bar/till routine. On our final day we learn cold bar and sequencing.

Start them on the register and drink abbreviations. This prepares them for hot/cold bar. Teach them customer connection and experience. This will help lead you into the standard. And will help connect the drink to the customer. Instead of just learning the drink. Also step by step think of your what why and when for your explanation of sequencing to the green bean.

Usually, the SM will post the training plan \*somewhere\*, like on a bulletin board in the BOH, or will write what you're supposed to do for the day on the DCR.

When my SM posts the training plan, that's what the BT & the Green Bean work on.

When my SM \*doesn't\* post the training plan, yeah, chaos.
rradiancee [OP]2 points4y ago
what do you mean your sm posts the training plan? all i was given was $1
monkeyeighty81 points4y ago
Yes, that's the thing! The SM usually fills it out according to what dates/times the new Partner is scheduled, and then signs off when each block is complete.
rradiancee [OP]2 points4y ago
oh, that would be helpful 🙃 so far i've just "trained" some rehires so it's been more of a formality than anything, but i hope they'll fill out the dates/times for me when i train an actual green bean!
monkeyeighty81 points4y ago
Yes, it *is* helpful if your SM fills it out.
I suppose you *could* fill it out, if indeed your schedules are posted & the new Partner's name is on there, & your schedules coincide...but then again, both of you may just be happening to work on the same day, & maybe your SM didn't want y'all to train that day...
I'd ask your SM what they want you to do with the sheet.
Happy BT bonu$es!

That’s the training plan. Use your iPad or laptop to do the actual teaching. It literally takes you step by step through everything.
