questions about policies and such (self.starbucksbaristas)

so i’ve been working at a location for a while now, less than a year, though.

i constantly get scheduled for 5 and a half hour shifts, or 5 hours and 45 minutes, to ensure i work more than 5 hours but don’t get a meal break. i don’t think this is against any policies but it really, really sucks. my boss knows i hate it, too. is there any way to properly handle this?

i’m also trans, and not only does my boss not call me the right pronouns 95% of the time, they don’t even say the right name even though it’s literally my birth name (they just call me a name that is close to mine). they have been corrected by multiple people many times. i’m not one to really hammer it in, i understand that pronouns can be tough, i really do. i try not to let those kinds of things bother me, especially coming from people i’m not close with. but jeez, it’s been this long and it seems like it’s only becoming more frequent.

there’s a lot more issues, but i’d like to refrain from speaking about them publicly, even if it is anonymous. for now, i’m just wondering how to resolve these things, although i suspect the latter is fairly difficult to get resolved.

the name and pronoun stuff? i hate being that person, though. i don’t like getting anyone in trouble. not even sure how to go about doing that, would i call PCC?

Definitely report the name and pronoun stuff. I hate being "that person" too (I barely correct my parents) but really, you don't have to deal with this stuff at work, and it's against policy for your managers to treat you that way. Also, if you don't report your manager, they'll just keep abusing people. Tbh that's the only reason I ever get myself to report transphobic stuff.

So I looked everywhere on the partner hub and I couldn't find out how to report something like this. I guess I would start by asking another manager, if there's one you trust. If you want I'll ask my manager tomorrow.

hey, late to reply, but that would be awesome if you could. i don’t know any other managers yet. i appreciate you for taking the time to reply and help out, thanks so much. my coworkers have been saying the same, so i guess i really should look into it.

Sure thing! I work tomorrow, I'll ask then and get back to you!

After you’re fifth hour you’re required to have a lunch.. at least in California. Also sometimes you’ll be scheduled a short shift to not get a break because you may not have enough people on the floor that day to cover breaks.. besides you’re still getting paid, you don’t get paid on breaks.

yeah, our labor laws here are kinda whack about breaks so it would have to be based off company policy, which is why it’s probably allowed. i know i get paid for that time, but if i’m working 5 and a half hours, it’s the same as a six hour shift without the break. if i’m working 5 hours and 45 minutes, that’s even more time on the floor than a six hour shift. sometimes i get shorter shifts, occasionally i am scheduled for six hours or more, but most often i get these over five hours, under six hours shifts. while that may not seem like too big of a deal, it’s very annoying when it’s consistently happening.

edit: tbh, it really feels like i’m being screwed over and taken advantage of. that’s a big part of the issue. i don’t see this happening to other coworkers, really. i’m fine working longer than 6 hours, and my boss knows this. i’m fine working less than 6, and my boss knows this. but i really dislike that i’m caught somewhere in the middle and not getting the break that anyone else gets when they reach 6 hours simply because i’m 15-30 minutes under the requirement, and that this is my normal shift length.

For the scheduling, it could just be the needs of the store or perhaps your availability (not knowing yours but I know this has been something we’ve discussed at my store for shifts like that). Someone else mentioned not having the people to cover for another break, also a valid thing. There’s been times when our store has been busy busy and no coverage for a half
For someone on a 6 hour shift so we send them home 10-15 mins early.

As for the pronouns, call PCC. There is a partner at a nearby store who did that (granted in their situation I think they just needed to be more understanding). It’s one thing if it’s an adjustment thing (for example I’ve never been asked to use the pronoun they/them before but these were that persons pronouns and after a lifetime of society using he/she it can be difficult to transition into using they/them. Not an intentional slight on the individuals preferences just a difficult adjustment even for the most understanding and open people). But if it’s being done intentionally and not calling you by your name, that just sounds rude. I’d call PCC if you’ve already exercised talking to your SM and DM, definitely.
