Key holder on 30 min breaks(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by caramel-twizzle
As a key holder when you have a 30 minute break are you allowed to leave the store!? I just want clarification because they aren’t paid 39 mins... so I thought you could.

I leave, my baristas text me if the armored car or dm comes. Not sure if its policy but i do it and my manager and dm dont seem to mind.

You're allowed to leave during unpaid 30 min breaks. If you're stuck and not able to leave, you get a paid 30 instead.
Everyone else spouting policies has it bass ackwards. Yes, keyholders can't just randomly leave the store, but that goes for anyone. They are completely entitled to do whatever they want during their 30. This includes leaving.

I was a barista, but in Malaysia. Didn’t know we were called key holders. So back then I could also have called myself a keyblade master.
Anyway, I am always around. I’m the goody goody kind until I’ve established a solid footing in the store.
I have never gotten caught 👻

I work at a store where the closer comes in from 3-1130 and mid-shift leaves at 330 so when they have to take half, there are no other key holders in the store. There are times where the closer leaves, but that's only to grab themselves outside food and there's never been an issue nor have they ever been scolded before. Hope this helps

Where I am in Alberta the law is that if they require you to stay on the property during your 30 then it has to be payed. They’re not paying you so they can’t dictate what you do or where you go during your 30. I understand the concern though, you should check local labour laws.

Policy states that a key holder has to be on premises at all times. As manager, you’re responsible for the store and your partners during your shift.

Where is the literature that mentions this specifically?

It was in the online training for shift supervisors. It should also be in the field ops guide.
