So today a couple came in to buy a bunch of coffee (bags of espresso, verona) and were inquiring if we had casi cielo. I’ve been working as a barista for a little over a month so I’m trying to figure it out, help them etc. What he said that made me a little offended was that when he requested it he said, “ you probably won’t know what it is because you’re a white guy no offense.”
At the time I didn’t dwell on it. We had customers, I’m trying to get people their coffee, etc. The more I thought about it though it really pissed me off. Just because I’m white I don’t know about a certain kind of coffee? Do white people exclusively drink some kind of coffee and not know about others? ( I think that was what he was implying.) Either way the more I think about it, it felt like some low level, backhanded racism. Has anyone had something like this happen to them before?
