How often do guys work at Starbucks? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by NS172002
Hey everyone,

So I’ve been looking for a part time job the past couple of days to help me save money for when I start college in the fall. I came across Starbucks, and so far I’m pleased with the reviews, and also love the fact that you get free coffee before a shift, and you get a free bag of coffee a week (I think). I also prefer fast paced jobs, as my last job at a restaurant was slow and boring.

Most of the reviews, though, are from women, which made me curious. Will Starbucks favor women applicants over me? Also, if I do get hired, will I be outnumbered as a guy? I like having women co-workers, but it’s always nice to have a guy or 2 to talk about guy stuff with.

Thanks!

I think front-facing, customer service-centric jobs like this have more appeal to women, or maybe we are just more tolerant of its requirements. The guys I've had on my teams have always been really chill, friendly sorts and we've definitely had "guy stuff" discussions despite me being female. I, like a likely disproportionate number of other starbucks employees, am of the queer variety. We've got a pretty healthy and supportive company culture in that area so you can pretty much expect that if you're hired you'll have more luck talking "guy stuff" with the resident lady-lovin-ladies but baristas are generally a chill, accepting lot. Just a heads-up in case that sort of thing weirds you out.

It really depends on your Store Manager, but they are not really allowed to discriminate based on gender. I have a good mix of men and women in my store. The only thing that I have a problem with is getting enough hours but I am pretty slow at picking it up as I lack previous experience and was drawn by the benefits, community, and wanting to be like Kato and do Latte art (even if it wasn’t Bruce Lee, may he rest in peace).

We have an equal amount of guys and girls at my store but for some reason ALL the guys work evening and ALL the girls work morning. So I never get to hang out with the guys.

I’ve worked at 3 different locations. Granted, the first was a kiosk in a grocery store, but every single time each of these locations has had more women than men. Dunno why, and I’m sure it varies, but that’s just been my experience.

It's mixed just like any other retail job. You won't be the only guy at your location.
