Is this just my store or are all starbucks this way? (self.starbucksbaristas)

(throw away acct)

I’ve been at my store since August and we’re the busiest store in my area by far. This means it has very high demands of course and a strict workplace which is understandable. But, we’re hardly allowed sick days at all. I’ve called in 2 times (stomach flu & pneumonia) since i started and have been criticized for it quite a bit. My coworkers including myself are expected to never call out (i’ve seen partners work with pneumonia, coughing up blood, throwing up, the flu, etc) because there’s nobody available to cover and it’s so stigmatized to call out. We have literally just enough staff but not enough to get people to cover hardly ever. I’m also expected to be at my shift 30 mins early and clock in early, which my friend at a different job says that normal, but i don’t like being criticized when i get there at my scheduled time instead of the 3mins early as my coworkers like.
This became more of a vent post but i’m just curious if it’s only my store that’s like this or is this just another one of the “quirks” about working at Starbucks? I like the benefits of Starbucks but if every store is this way, idk how much longer i can continue to be an employee here.

edit: tl;dr, sick days are basically not allowed and i’m expected to come in way earlier than scheduled, is every location this way?

Sounds like your store is severely understaffed. There should be enough partners in a store to make up for ppl that cant make it in sick if not at the very least you should be able to call other stores in your district to see if there is anyone who will cover you. I'm not gonna lie we've all worked sick one time or another but to be afraid to even call out because your sick is crazy. I say if your manager isnt being understanding about it call partner resources. And make sure everyone else does the same because your manager can get in trouble for this. If your store is a high volume store your manager should be able to afford hiring more partners. Most partners never think about partner resources but they're for out of line stuff like this.

I’ve been considering calling partner resources, i just hope it’s anonymous because i don’t want my manager knowing i reported her. she does her job very well considering we’re greatly understaffed but today is an example of me having a very bad cold and not wanting to work bc i’m contagious and have no voice, but i won’t call in because i already called in last month. (last time i called in, i was only given 4 hours in one week apparently because i called in recently beforehand according to a shift manager).

You cannot be expected to work when you're not food safe and any changes to your schedule must be confirmed directly, that includes coming in early. No matter what criticisms you may receive, they CAN NOT FIRE YOU for not working outside of your scheduled hours. You are allowed to say no. Not every Starbucks is like that. I have worked at two locations, and while it can be a bit of a guilt trip to leave a hole in coverage I have never had any particular backlash over not working while sick or coming in to cover. As a side note, working in food business while you're sick is actually a huge no-no, in fact it's something that is checked for in QASA standards. Not only is it bad for morale, you can spread disease which while it might be "just a cold/flu" for someone young and healthy, it can be life-threatening for a customer or partner that is vulnerable... of which I am one! If partners at your store are being pressured to work while sick, PLEASE report it to your DM!

I've never heard of being required to be there and clicked in before you're scheduled. At my store, unless someone calls you in you can't get any extra time punched. Imo our store hired too frequently, I keep losing hours to trainees

That has gotta be some borderline cdc fda osha gray area if you're contagious! Definitely try to chat up some partners at another once of your DM's stores to see if that's common. I have never been challenged or chastised for using SL.

I do know your partner numbers are taken but I'm not to sure if they let your manager know who the complaint was from. If anything you can start out asking if your manager will know it's you and then decide if you want to proceed after that.

My location doesn't have either of those...
