Getting a new regular’s pronoun right (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sosaidsmudge
So I’m southern and say ma’am and sit out of habit. I’ve just officially completed my training but am still figuring it all out slowly.

I’m working drive through two days ago and it’s clearly a guys voice making the order. Say thank you sir see you at the window. A face with stubble but clearly a woman’s pulls up. I’m waiting for the cloud white macchiato bullshit and ask what’s your name? Get a woman’s name and immediately apologize for getting the pronoun wrong. She comes back in today and I recognize and get it right and she pulls up all smiles and tips us 15 dollars for making her day.

I can never imagine how hard it is to be transitioning, and I’m grateful for the tip, but it’s amazing how much of an impact you can make someone’s day while your drive through times are shit. Today they were but today was a good day.

i'm trans and very passable to the point I can't remember the last time I was misgendered but I can tell you it's such a big deal for someone to even make an effort to use right pronoun. i thought this post was gonna be annoyed about this person but i'm grateful it's otherwise!

I felt sooooo bad. I have friends who are transitioning and saving up for top surgeries and I can’t fully understand how one innocent, mid gender identity feels as I’m sure it happens daily. Especially when you still have stubble coming in. But I can hopefully understand that trying to correctly identify the correct pronoun. Sear the voice and order in my memory and make it count the next time.

I’m so glad you have become who you always were friend! From a great bean who cares. I could care less about drive through times, but customer connections that become human ones will always deserve a little chat time.

It was very big of you to apologize and correct yourself. A lot of people would just pretend like it didn't happen. Kudos to you!

Thanks, I have friends in that community and could just see how defeated she was. I was apologetic but what a shitty day to start your day. Will never happen again from me. Fortunately my manager (who happens to be gay) was next to me and sent a group message out to all our staff about that and how it was handled and encouraged them all to be that sensitive if it would happen again, but look out for the iced venti six shot skinny caramel macchiato with extra drizzle with a non warmer blueberry muffin. I hope she keeps coming by through DT and has a smile every morning now.

Semi-related: I was barring and my DTO was a SSV who was very well-loved in our store and happened to be in early stages of FtM transition. For the first time, someone heard his voice taking the order and said "thank you sir." And the two of us others who had headsets on turned to him and he was just in the happiest tears. The whole team had a great group hug. It was a beautiful day.

If it was Canada, one slip up with a pronoun and there are grounds to be arrested on the spot. Scary time we live in.
