I’m sorry if this has shown up here before but I am 100% over partners being forced to come in sick. I would much rather be on a floor that is short with partners then see my sick coworkers coming in and hacking on everything. I get so mad when I hear the shifts and managers yelling at partners on the phone when they are calling in. It even says in the handbook that it’s not the barista’s responsibility to find coverage when ill. Yeah people abuse calling out but if you’re really ill, screw them, stay home! End of rant.

It seems like having 1 person call in and be short staffed for 1 Day is better than having someone who’s sick come in and infect everyone else causing more people to call in! Like it just seems like common sense...... plus, when I’m a customer and see someone who’s sick, it makes me less likely to order something to avoid getting sick!

Agreed. Legit sick= stay home and please get better so partners and customers don’t also get sick. Flip side: don’t be a lazy bum and call out sick just bc you don’t feel like working. It is a douche move to make the rest of your team work extra hard bc you feel like having a day off. Get your shift covered and be willing to pick up shifts for your peers when they need a day off. If everyone did this, there’d be no more issues taking a day off. 🤷🏼♀️

I was really ill once, called in, was told to find coverage, couldn't so dragged my ass into the store and as soon as I got there the store manager took one look at my green/grey face and said, "What are you doing here? We covered your shift, go home." Well, that would have been nice to know before I stressed over finding someone and then went to the effort to go into the store! That manager was an you-know-what.

My manager does this too. Told me to call other stores when I was throwing up, and then later was like, "I actually found you coverage!"
She makes it seem like it's our responsibility to find coverage so that when she actually does her job, she seems like suuuuuch a good manager.

I had to work a full 8 hour shift on bar once while i had the stomach flu. Mask and all. I would literally take 10s to throw up. It was all because my SM wouldn’t answer my calls and no one would cover so i was forced to stay

No way, that is insane. Shame on your SM. That’s not okay at all. If I were a customer I would have been like uh...hello, health department?

Amen! 🙏🏻

Wow I kinda needed to hear this rn cause I legit just called in. I never do and I felt so guilty and I hate feeling like I just annoyed everyone but my fever has gotten worse and after yesterday’s shift I was like yeah no way I’m going to double today. Thanks!
ssays13 [OP]1 points4y ago
Oh man! No one should ever feel guilty for calling out sick. You need to rest! Just turn your phone off and go to sleep!

One time I worked while I had strep for three days. My SM at the time didn’t believe I was actually sick and told me a fever wasn’t enough to call in (she believe you had to be throwing up or having diarrhea to call in). It wasn’t until i was having literal fever delusions that a shift manager got super worried and told my SM she was immediately sending me home. My SM yelled at me and told me if I didn’t have a doctors note that I would be written up.
