Should I put my two weeks in?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by moonlitsrvvr
Hey guys, so I’ve been at Starbucks for only two months and I feel like I can’t handle it anymore. The physical and emotional labor is too much for me to take on, dealing with problematic customers and having to be kind, Starbucks is a multi billionaire company but I’m only getting paid $12.50 and my paycheck every two weeks really only amount to $288 - this is my second job and I liked my first one in retail more because that was mainly customer service. I work really well and I get things done efficiently but I feel like I need to take my hard work somewhere else. Should I stick it through or just put my two weeks in?

Honestly it’s not worth sticking through unless you need the money/ benefits. it sounds like you aren’t happy and want to leave so I think you should follow your gut.

oh my goodness we start out at 9.50 you must be in like California or something

Or in Canada

please put it in your two weeks. no job is worth sacrificing your mental and physical health!!!

Dude I’d take your job just for the 12.50/hr. I don’t even make 10/hr at my store. Working 40 hour weeks for pennies over here 🙃

not even 10.00? that’s crazy! i’m a shift from canada and our starting wage is 18.30 and barista i believe is 15.60.

Well that’s bc Canada is awesome 😂 no I live in Missouri and our wages suuuuuuck. If I didn’t need the insurance and part time hours right now, I’d be gone. Not that I don’t love what I do (most days) but no one can live on what we make.

I quit after about 3 months. It’s not for everyone! If you’re not in great need of the cash/benefits, it’s not worth it.

So most of the people here are saying just quit bc it's not worth losing mental/physical health and they are wring but you should consider a fee things first.
Like first, your resume. It doesn't look good on a resume if you don't stay at jobs for more than a couple months. I've heard a lot that 3 months is a good minimum. Also, Starbucks looks amazing on a resume. It's an extremely difficult job and employers like to see that on a resume. And if you put those two things together, an employer may look at your resume and see that you only worked at Starbucks for 2/3 months and conclude that you can't handle a difficult job.
The second thing you definitely should consider is having this convo with your manager. Tell them how you're feeling and ask them what they think about it. This job takes time to become accustomed to. When I started, I only worked nights and I think it ended up helping me bc things were a lot slower so I was able to learn things in a slower-paced environment.
Whatever you do, definitely have a chat with your manager tho. They want you to become effective more than anyone else. So see if they have a solution or any ideas before you give your 2 weeks. This will not only help you possible come to keep/like your job but it will also, likely, make your manager look at you differently. That will see you as someone who wants to do successful and isn't going to quit when things are easy. And whether or not you end up staying with Starbucks, your manager is more likely to give you a better reference if your next employer calls them to ask about you.
I apologise that I went on for this long haha. Best of luck! I hope you end up staying!

There's no shame in putting in your two weeks. Starbucks doesn't pay well at all and the job isn't for everyone! Really I've found you either love it or you hate it. No point wasting your time doing something you don't like while not making enough money, either.

If you prefer the customer service element you can totally ask to be primarily on POS. I don't really prefer it but I have a bad back and I'm better at pretending not to be misanthropic than my fellow partners. Make sure you have good shoes (I wear the $20 Tredsafe slip ons from Walmart and they are basically the best) and stand on a mat.
Or quit. It's your body, you can decide if it's worth your time. I'd advise lining up your next job first though.

Honestly same. I don't see how anyone could make a living off minimum wage. I only work to help the household with a bill or two each paycheck and the rest goes towards my hobbies. I thought about quitting soon too.
